    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Handelsbanken. I got to work on a range of different tasks that allowed me to get a good introduction into what working at a bank would be like. Staff were very friendly and made me feel welcome throughout the intern programme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued throughout my internship. I was made to feel welcome from the outset and I felt that the tasks I did seemed to help out in the office and everyone was very appreciative of the assistance.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The team that I worked with were very helpful. Anytime I was stuck on something or even if I just had a general query then the team were always happy to help out.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Unfortunately when I initially joined two of the account managers went away on holiday which meant the branch was slightly understaffed and so I didn't have as much work as I would have liked although the staff who were still at the branch tried their best to give me as much as possible to do. However, once everyone was back I was kept busy with a wide variety of tasks.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility for my short time here and was allowed to be responsible for quite a few tasks meaning that I had to ensure a high standard of work. This helped me to be work quickly but accurately.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It has allowed me to work well in a team; something which will be critical for working in labs next year. It has helped me to be more conscientious in my approach to work and not just dive right into it like a bull in a china shop. It has also helped with my confidence and ability to talk to new people.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A very relaxed office where everyone was able to work well with each other. Everyone in the office had a good balance of work and whilst also having some banter amongst each other. When it came to meeting with clients staff were very professional and this resulted in a very professional atmosphere which is what I would expect from a bank if I was a customer here.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised. I was always kept informed of what I needed to bring or any forms I had to complete beforehand as well as any upcoming events. There was an intern induction day at head offices in Birmingham which allowed us to get an introduction in the systems used by the bank and also allowing us to meet with staff from different areas of the business to get an understanding of their role. This proved very useful as I would have been overwhelmed at the beginning of the internship had I not had this introduction.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were a few visit days to Birmingham head offices which were used for training and also expanding our knowledge of the bank and the different departments. At present the bank has an ageing work force and as such are keen to hire younger workers which is why they are keen on hiring people that have been on the internship. This means that they've had interns like myself shadow all the different managers to get an understanding to prepare us for a potential future career in that role.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 1/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Handelsbanken are a very good company to work for with a large focus on providing excellent customer service. As such working here in the future would certainly be something I would consider and recommend to others. They make sure that you are welcome and you are an individual rather than just another number in the system. This individual touch makes you feel more valued and its more personal which is something that I want to see in a company; treating their staff with respect.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was the only intern at my branch.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost in Burton is very reasonably priced. I went on a leaving do for one of the staff who was moving branches and we went for a meal at a local Italian. The meal was very good and was relatively cheap for the amount of food that was ordered on that night.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't go out in Burton as I drive to work

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I attended a charitable event held at a local car dealership with some of the branch managers of Burton branch. It was good to get to know the staff outside of the office and we also had a chance to see a lot of the customers of the branch in attendance. It was good to put a face to names that were talked about in branch and understand more about the customers.
