    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The key element of my placement involved working with Corporate and Individual Banking Managers in their day-to-day activities. Every day is different and the company also allows you to 'make your own internship' which enables different projects of your choosing to be undertaken. Some of the many exciting aspects of the role include client facing opportunities and being included in events with senior employees at Handelsbanken.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • At Handelsbanken I was able to gain skills in reviewing financial positions, speaking with a diverse range of clients, team work, administrative know-how and jointly ran my own project.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Handelsbanken offered more opportunities to take responsibilities for tasks than I had ever expected. It is essential to firstly prove you are capable but once you have done this: then your managers can offer unique tasks in finance which no other bank provides.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The team I was part of, in the city of Stoke-on-Trent, was extremely supportive and you also have access to guidance from the regional head offices too, if necessary. At no point during the internship/placement did I believe support/guidance was unavailable which was very reassuring.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • Handelsbanken is a lesser-known bank in the UK but has risen to be one of the best. The company has greatly expanded across the country and the availability of opportunities within the business goes well beyond rivals. Prior to beginning the placement I was thinking about whether I would want to join the company in the long-term but follow my internship completion: I can now see myself joining the company after graduating from university.

  • 7. Would you recommend Handelsbanken to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Handelsbanken
  • I have already provided details of the company/recruitment to two university friends as Handelsbanken, now in it's 150th year, is a modern bank with hugely ambitious expansion plans. If you are interested in applying then I would recommend searching up a local branch and then emailing their Branch (or Deputy) Manager as they will be able to direct you. Otherwise, email someone in one of the UK Head Offices (Manchester or London).
