    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The internship is focused on giving an overview of banking and different career options within the Bank - the intern has daily opportunities to learn and to network. At the branch, the intern is given full responsibility, performs various tasks and assists the team. The tasks include administration, dealing with customers, processes like account management, credit assessment etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The internship develops both hard and soft skills. It promotes analytical skills, teaches professional relationship-building with customers, teaches working with IT systems, gives a good overview of UK financial regulations, the banking industry and career options, etc. It develops soft skills like team work, independence and responsibility, communication, time management, and gives a taste of what a day-to-day job at an office looks like.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Everyone is very supportive and is always willing to help, starting with immediate colleagues to HR and personal mentor. Moreover, support is not given just about the assigned tasks, but also more generally in terms of personal development - e.g. encouragement to visit different departments - and career path, everyone is willing to share their personal working experience.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The Bank has a unique culture within the industry, pretty much the negative stereotypes turned upside down. Work-life balance is a central value. Rather than being competitive with colleagues, the Bank values team-spirit and encourages everyone to develop their skills and follow their interests. Everyone is very friendly and supportive and treats inters as equals.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I very much enjoyed the internship. I study humanities, but that was never an issue. I was given a broad range of opportunities to learn about an industry I have not worked at before. I felt valuable because the tasks I performed were really helping my team, and I could tell them what my interests are and focus on them. The excellent workplace culture certainly heightened this.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Handelsbanken
  • The Bank is looking for someone who aligns with their values. When you apply, show that you value sustainability, that you are responsible, active, creative, serious about what you do, and interested in the job. Do not be worried about joining if you have no experience with banking or if maths is not your strength.
