    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship at Handelsbanken. I have experienced different parts of the bank and spent time in both the branches and head office in different departments. All staff I have been in contact with have been pleasant and really want to help the interns have the best experience at the bank!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone at the bank is really welcoming, I have been encouraged to spend time in different departments and have met a wide range of people who all have the best interests of the interns. I have been invited to after work social settings and am routinely involved in going out for lunch.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My branch manager has regularly checked I am enjoying the tasks I have been given and am kept busying. My manager has also ensured I have seen many different areas of the branch and invited me to different presentations and meetings to meet other staff and customers. Overall the support from management has been excellent.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am always given tasks to do, I have a few long projects that I can work on through my time at the bank as well as smaller tasks throughout the day. We have also been given a project for all the interns to work on together which again has helped to ensure I always have things to do.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I have been given some responsibility during my time at the bank, I have been given tasks to do which I can do alone with no input from other staff however due to the nature of the banking industry my work often gets checked. I am given responsibility in terms of planning time away from my own branch and spending time with customers.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have learnt skills which enable me to se my degree in practise, which I believe will benefit me in my final year of studying. I have been exposed to computer systems which are used in the banking industry, learning how to use them and I am now confident going onto these systems myself. I have also learnt skills that are specific to the industry which I know will benefit me for life as I intend to progress into the industry and gain a career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone in the office gets on well, everyone is willing to help each other and discussions often take place to get different ideas on how we should progress with a situation. The atmosphere is good and the staff often have friendly banter and discuss things such as football or holidays.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The work place is organised well, everyone knows what they are doing and gets their work done but they're always willing to help each other. The internship reflects the set up of the bank and each intern has had a different experience and often the internship is what you make of it. Each branch of the bank is different and this can be said for the internship based at each branch. However there is a outline structure for the internship to follow and the group project ensures an end product of the internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel due to my manager on the internship the bank has invested in me. My colleagues have all ensured that they do their best to expose me to all areas of the bank, this being said for staff in the bank and in other departments. I was given online training courses to complete over the first few weeks at the bank.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I have been exposed to different departments that give me the possibility of part time work through my final year of study, to which I have responded by sending my CV and submitting job applications, I am just waiting to hear back! There has also been lots of opportunities for me to show my enthusiasm for working for the company when I have finished uni and there is lots of staff that the bank that were previously interns, so I can see there it is very possible to stay and progress with the bank

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • yes, there is often drinks held at local places after work and on pay day. I was also invited to several leaving parties for people that were changing departments within the bank, this allowed me to meet more people from around the bank and also have fun! During lunch hours it was also considered a social time with colleagues regularly going out for lunch etc.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I already live in the city for uni and so I have only had to cover travel costs of £30 per week. Again socialising in the area is the same as what I am used to due to being based here for uni for the past two years. The area in which I am based is a well off area so food prices may be slightly higher than normal however I wasn't overly exposed to this as I often take my own lunch.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is good, there are lots of bars around the branch. It is also just a tram from Manchester city centre and head office in based in the centre so the night life here is very good. There is lots of different music types and bars/clubs that cater for all ages and all tastes.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I am invited to lots of social events outside of the office, there is a social committee for the bank that organises sporting activities and going out after work/ going to the races etc. There is also team nights out for each branch or department that I am invited on regularly and do attend. I have also been invited on a team meal the week after I finish my internship
