    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have had the best time working at CTT, Doing a placement year develops students both personally, emotionally and definitely heightens their work ethic. Putting you in good stead for future prospects. Personally, I have had an incredible time on my placement year and will be upset to leave. That said, I am so glad someone else will get the experience I have had.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Every day, you work with someone new. Being a member at a big site there are numerous teams and people to work with. You create both working relationships and friendships with colleagues. Looking after recruitment I work with different teams across site regularly. Each and every one of them showed me respect and valued my opinions.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Being in HR we have a separate office, there are 15 of us in the office, we get on so well. The best part about my team is how willing people are to help and support when needed. There is always someone to turn to, they are not just colleagues but friends as well.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Working in HR you come in with a list of tasks and leave at the end of the day with 50 more, but I love how reactive the role is. You are busy, but you are never bored. and if there is ever anything which is a struggle a specialist will be able to assist. It takes some getting used to but it is worth it.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At Cummins, being a placement student doesn’t mean you have any less responsibility than any other employee. You will be a valued and respected individual. With time, and effort you gain a level of responsibility within the team.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • There is absolutely nothing like real life working. The routine, the people, the work, everything is so different from university and really does set you in good stead for the future. I highly recommend attending any extra training courses offered as these will most definitely come in handy.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The best part about my team is how willing people are to help and support when needed. There is always someone to turn to, they are not just colleagues but friends as well. however, it can be quiet... almost too quiet and sometimes feels a little lonely if no one is in. But you get past that.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The first few weeks seem a little bit of a blur, it is difficult to find your feet within a global corporate company whilst also developing skills and bonding with team mates. however once this has settled the overall experience was organised.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I have been on many training courses since being with Cummins. for both personal development as well as HR specific skills. The best training course was effective communication training. This developed public speaking and interpersonal skills. It allowed reflection and continuous development.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Sadly, graduate prospects here are completely dependent on the headcount given to the company at the time, however I have made numerous contacts and intend to keep an eye out on any opportunities which arise in the future. Honestly, I would be extremely happy to return to Cummins in the future.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are about 30 students each year at Cummins. I would say I connected more so with full time employees than the placements but this is as I decided to live on my own. there is definitely the opportunity to make strong friendships with placements.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Fair. With the rate of pay from Cummins you can live well. It is a struggle thinking of going back to student life after having such a good wage!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Huddersfield night life is fine if you are out with a good group of people. Luckily we are close to Leeds and Manchester which is good for big nights out.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Dependant on what you enjoy doing, absolutely. I joined the local gym and a dance school but there are plenty of things to be involved in.

    4/5
