    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • At first the internship was very daunting, it is difficult to go from a university lifestyle to working a 9-5 routine however, the support given is amazing literally. Working in the banking industry is typically very pressured and stressful for interns however, at Handelsbanken the Swedish culture literally waives that. Whilst you have a lot to learn and must do so quickly, the pressure factor is not there as much and instead, support at any given time.

    3/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very, in my particular branch there was only one other person doing the role I am now and her work load was a lot so I came in, learnt quickly and was able to help with that stress factor so I do feel appreciated.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • any time support is needed, its given. I have an assigned trainer in branch alongside a regional team who consistently gets in contact to make sure you're okay/ provide training. in branch I am reassured constantly that is okay to make the occasional mistake and ask for help any time its needed. Luckily at Handelsbanken we have a lot of online support which can answer almost any query you need.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I am still learning so there are certain tasks I cannot be left alone with however, I am busy every day, there is never nothing to do!

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • at first not much, now as I've learnt me and my colleague split responsibilities and work loads between us. There is a real team effort here.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have completed my degree however, I know what I learn here will further my future career and allow me to complete my professional studies in the coming years.

    3/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Quiet but relaxed and cheerful. we often talk but of course most of the time we are busy working to communicating with customers.

    2/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • very organised, even though I joined the internship at a later date. there are set intern tests that are completed and training up in regional office. In branch training Isn't as organised as you learn as you go alone so I learn depending what needs to be done that day whether it be a loan or a new bank account.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • one thing Ive learnt here is that yes basic training is provided and is mandatory at first however, in Handelsbanken you get out of it what you ask/ initiate. I am able to book my own training courses I wish to go on at any given date online to further my development. Aside from that we have online tests that must be competed yearly alongside, a training and development plan which my manager is yet to have for me. Handelsbanken is keen on developing us new starters as essentially we are the future of the bank. The good thing about the decentralised business model is that there is not head office I must ask to get training or development, my branch manager is mostly responsible for this so I can have a chat with her and plan and develop accordingly.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    Healthcare/Dental

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • its very appealing. most of the people that have worked with Handelsbanken over the years have worked their way up the ladder into different banking area, and that is what I plan to do too.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All young people meet every month for drinks in London which is a great networking opportunity.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • my branch is just outside of London so not much. I also drive to work so only need petrol costs. if i need to travel between offices for any reason my expenses are reimbursed. Socialising in this area doesn't really occur for me, I go to London if anything
