    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The internship was much more engaging than I expected and really enjoyed the working environment. From start to finish I was given resposibility for my own tasks and had a great deal of support from my colleagues. The future opportunities with the bank also look promising. Through the whole internship I felt motivated to go to work and never had a bad day.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The most enjoyable part of the internship was working within the branch team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The Handelsbanken internship program was laid out so that everything was easy to understand and achieve the most from my time there. My branch manager would always make sure I was occupied and spent the time in different departments of the branch. The manager was always approachable and when asking questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Most of the time I always had a task to complete. There is a project for all the interns to complete thourght the 2 months so in quieter moments that filled most of my time. I was always given new and enjoyable task to work through and more responsibility over time. After the first month I would turn up to work knowing what I had to complete that day and made it very realistic to the job, and would have deadlines that I had to work to so I was left to manage my own time making it very engaging.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Over the course of the internship I was given more and more responsibilities so my the end I felt like a valued member of the team and that the work I was doing was of genuine use to the branch. This really made in internship feel like I was part of the branch and was the best part of the internship.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The initial part of the internship allowed me to get used to the banking programs and operations. This tended to be learn as you go and more hands on. There were also more general training based online that all staff need to complete which covered areas from health and safety to banking regulations. I was nice to be able to communicate with customers but because of the length of the internship you can only do so much.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Being in a small team I got to know everyone quickly and it had a relaxed but professional feel to it. Everyone was friendly and willing to help and chat. The manager was very relaxed and friendly thought the internship. Being in such a small team can have its difficulties but the people I worked with were all very friendly and fun to be around.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The branch I visited accommodated me very well involving me in all the areas of the bank. After talking to other interns the work load and structure varied depending on the branch and others weren't as busy as I was. The whole internship is well managed and is very clear and communication is great.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Because of the length of the internship there was a limit to what could be achieved. The branch staff would support me in learning the systems and day to day running of the bank and were always valuable when I had a question. Hearing from new staff just staring out at the bank and talking to the manager. The bank seems to be committed to supporting new staff in development.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After the internship everyone in the bank is very positive about future career options within the bank and it seems like if you manage to do well on your internship you have a very good chance at a job if one is available. The initial and potential wage does seem to be kept quite quiet however.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Because of the distances between branches it is difficult to meet with other interns so only met twice during the internship for the project.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • When another intern visited the branch the manager would pay for lunch, which was a nice touch.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Really depends on the branch you go to, I was based in a major city so was a bit easier to do things after work.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Occasionally other staff member would be part of a charity or sporting team so would get offers to join in on a couple of nights. The branch also went out on charity events which was nice to spent time with my colleagues outside of work, this was paid by the bank so is a good perk of the job.

    4/5
