    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Absolutely loved the experience. From a educational point of view I could not have learnt more from an 8 week internship. Every question that ever popped in to my head was answered and there were no stupid questions. Further to this I was handed a relatively large amount of responsibility in correspondence to me experience which is the best way to learn. The breath of work I was involved with was incredible and all in all there was not a single dull day. From a social point of view the team I worked with were an absolute pleasure and couldn't have been more accommodating. It of course helped that I am fascinated by the job but all in all It has to be a 10/10 here.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was keen to keep me busy and to try to get me involved with as much as possible. A genuine interest was taken in my learning and time and thought was actually put in to what would would be the best learning opportunity for me. I was given responsibility and was trusted to do a good job right from the off. They truly were the nicest group of guys i've ever worked with. I was sad to leave at the end of my internship.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Every task asked of me was clearly explained to me from the off. Where I couldn't quite make ends meet It was no problem, we simply went through how I can go about the task more successfully next time round. Every mistake I made was politely flagged up, not to put me down but to simply let me know so I could learn from it for the next time. I also felt sufficiently rewarded for good work which kept me motivated confident in my abilities and what I was achieving.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was almost always up to something interesting and eventful, whether that be out the office on a viewing or working through a new side of the profession I had never seen before. There were one or two moments that the team was tied up so couldn't keep me busy or small stints of time but on the whole I was very busy.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was trusted a surprisingly large amount in comparison to my experience level. This was my first proper experience of this profession and within days I was being trusted to draft heads of terms for clients and work out floor areas fro properties. By the end of my placement I was calling clients, holding viewings of multi-million pound properties and I genuinely felt like a true member of the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • With my degree: not so much but with future studies in the area and beyond: an enormous amount. I have never learnt so much about a completely new field in such a small amount of time. By the end of m,y placement I understood 95% of the jargon being thrown around and had a very good idea of what was going on in my own work and in those around me. When I come to interview for future jobs and enter in to the industry this knowledge will be priceless.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very friendly and welcoming. I was not thrown in at the deep end, Everyone made an effort to check I was alright and enjoying my self. The team was actually a lot of fun and in my view got the work play balance just right. The same carries for the rest of the office. I had many lovely convocations with people form all different departments in and around the office.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Couldn't have run smoother. The team was so busy that I was flooded with loads of cool stuff every day to get involved with. I had my own desk, phone, computer right from the off and was as well connected as anybody in terms of communication. Admittedly there was no master plan to my placement but there didn't need to be because I was able to just dip in and out of work here and there where ever opportunities arose and I really enjoyed this.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company put so much time and effort in to me. Especially the team I had the pleasure of working with. If I asked a question, colleagues may not have been able to answer it right that minute but would make sure they made time to do so later. I often had a colleague take up to an hour out of his day to sit me down and talk me though the more complex sides to the profession. In terms of travel expenses to allow me to attend site viewings, these were all picked up by the firm enhancing my learning experience that little bit further.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At the time I completed my placement there were no other placement students to socialise with however there was a very healthy social scene with the other grads and more senior members of the team. I was invited out for a drink after work with everyone weekly and met a lot of lovely people this way. Im actually scheduled to meet up with the team again in the coming month for a quick drink and a catch up which I expect to be a lot of fun.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very low. Birmingham is a relatively cheap place and also where I attend university so already have accommodation sorted here. The commute was very cheap on the train and we all chipped in to the drinks and food after work making it very reasonably priced.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As already explained I go to university in the area I worked so am very accustomed to it. In my opinion Birmingham, along with Manchester and Bristol have the most varied and growing nightlife scenes in the country, growing mainly of the back of the music scenes that have originated in these cities. I would definitely recommend a night out in Birmingham, whatever your cup of tea.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • In my short stay I wasn't offered involvement in any external activities however knew they existed and I am sure I could have got involved if I had asked.
