    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • The work that I was given was interesting but challenging enough that I felt I walked away from the experience having learned a lot. The tasks we were set in groups were obviously being examined but there was still a relaxing atmosphere as it was clear the examiners wanted you to do well. We went bowling and had quite a few (but not too many) drinks with the Trainees one evening which was a really lovely, personal way to experience the firm. I would have liked to stay and do another week on the Vacation Scheme as the time flew by.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • The Trainees in the CDR department were definitely a highlight of my Vacation Scheme! The Trainees ensured I was welcomed on the first day as they took me around the offices in the Department to introduce me to the team. Again, everyone I met was really friendly and took the time to get to know me and where I was in my legal career. I enjoyed finding out about their legal careers and I really value all the helpful advice I received. The CDR team always ensured I had engaging work to do. I felt they really valued my opinion and were thankful for my help on matters they were dealing with.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The CDR department provided me with varying levels of challenging work so ensure I got the most out of my time at Walker Morris. The Trainees would often stop by my desk to ensure I was managing the work and offered to answer any questions I had. Those who set the work were always available to answer any questions I had and when I had completed the task they were happy to sit down and go through it with me.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I definitely learned more about the legal practice in one week at Walker Morris than I have done during the GDL. I will value the simple things I learned such as: how to write a clear and concise note, how to build a case study of evidence, and how to think outside the box in finding alternative sources of information. I developed my time management skills and communication skills by ensuring I kept people updated on any work I was doing for them, and the importance of always asking for the deadline for a task.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Walker Morris ensured that there was a structured timetable to ensure that time on the Vacation Scheme was maximized. This meant that we experienced many different aspects of the firm and were given an insight into different departments. There was plenty of time to talk to all members of the department throughout the week, whilst completing the work, and also to the Trainees at the bowling/ drinks, and the Trainee Department chats.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • I cannot stress just how friendly and approachable every member of this firm is. The CDR department was very busy during my time there, yet everyone ensured that they took the time to talk to me and let me help them with their work. The graduate recruitment team clearly want to provide everyone on the Vacation Scheme with the best possible environment to showcase their skills and personality. The work itself is challenging and fast paced but it is evident that everyone at Walker Morris enjoys what they do, and they want you to feel the same.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There was not much personal training as it was only for one week. However I developed the skills necessary to work in an office environment and the skills that will be necessary to be an effective Trainee.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • I felt I received a realistic view of everyday life at Walker Morris, particularly as I stayed late every day (this was my own decision). The department was busy, as one would expect, which allowed me to get involved with current cases. I knew Walker Morris is a very sociable firm so the night out during the week really highlighted this. Most importantly I walked away from the week knowing that the legal profession was for me, and Walker Morris was the firm for me.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • Chatting to members of the department and the Trainees was particularly insightful as everyone I spoke to had the same 'work hard play hard' attitude. It was clear that the firm prides itself on its high-quality legal expertise but they bring personality to their work and to their clients. They noted how they feel the firm is becoming more flexible with working hours. They felt it should not be a simple '9-5' job and the amount of hours you put in should be rewarding for the solicitor and the client.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I went into this Vacation Scheme having done little legal work experience in law firms, I came out knowing that this is definitely the career path for me. The work I received was interesting and engaging. I had never done some of the tasks I was set so I really did learn a lot, and I will take this knowledge to assist in my studies and legal career. I am really glad I undertook the Walker Morris Vacation Scheme as it has given me direction and drive to become a solicitor.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • In comparison to other Vacation Schemes the rate is a little lower. However other Schemes expect you to need the extra money for travel and accommodation. As Walker Morris is a one site firm they expect you to have a base in the city to demonstrate your connections to Leeds and the firm.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes, there was a social event comprised of a bowling and drinks evening which was a perfect opportunity to get to know the trainees and the graduate recruitment, team. There was also Trainee Department chats so you could ask any questions, and we met up again on the Friday evening for a few drinks to end the week. My department also took me out for lunch during the week, which I particularly enjoyed.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • I enjoyed the bowling as it was fun, but also competitive so everyone really got into it. The trainees ensured that we enjoyed ourselves but also felt relaxed. Everyone was really approachable and friendly.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, there was a notice board in the CDR department detailing the charity events that Walker Morris are involved in. We were also shown a video at the beginning of the week which highlighted many opportunities for employees outside of work, whether this was sports, socials or pro-bono work. They had a lot to offer.
