    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I extremely enjoyed my week at Walker Morris. It was extremely well organised and was over before I knew it! There was an excellent mix of both formal, structured time in the department and time spent socialising in an informal environment after working hours.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt valued whilst working in the firm. Everyone was extremly friendly whether they were partners or trainees and were willing to spend time chatting and getting to know us. Spending 5 days within the office allowed us to observe different members of the department and get involved in real work that Walker Morris was doing.  The client focus mentality of the firm was emulated amongst the whole workforce. We were encouraged to start thinking like a solicitor from the very beginning.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • I had both a buddy who was a trainee and a supervisor who was a director at the firm. They were always on hand to offer any support and answer any questions I had in regards to the work I had been set. I was in a department where I was given lots of useful tasks set by a variety of different members of the team.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was slightly nervous to start off with coming from a non-legal background however, although all tasks set were challenging i always knew help was available. I never felt at a disadvantage to any of the other candidates with a legal background. General skills like my communication and teamwork were both challenged and developed throughout the week especially in the different tasks which were required of us.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The week was very well organised with a good balance of time in the department and time spent socialising. There was always a task to be done and the days flew by very quickly! There were different activities which diversified the week hugely.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Everyone throughout the firm was approachable and friendly even though they were very busy. People made time to chat and get to know us. I was given real work from the very beginning. The days flew by as I was able to really get my teeth into some of the bigger projects my supervisor set me. There was also plenty of time to chat with different people throughout the day

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Yes - I had to travel into Leeds everyday. The amount paid covered this and a whole lot more!

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were plenty of opportunities both in a formal and informal setting to get the chance to talk with different employees. We went for drinks with the trainees on Monday and Wednesday which provided a more casual setting to get to understand the real ethos of the firm. There was plenty of time spent in the department where we could introduce ourselves to the partners and other members of staff  who didn't attend the social events.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The social events were very well attended by the trainees which was nice as this gave us chance to converse in a slightly less daunting setting. In addition to multiple opportunities throughout the day to network there were 2 organised social events. Everyone was very welcoming and would answer any questions we had in regards to both work and the social side of the firm.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • An informal Q&A session was had during the week with  4 trainees. This is where the majority of opportunities the firm had to offer arose. Walker Morris have different sports teams and social events throughout the year which they encourage everyone to be involved with. It was nice to know that a big firm still thought about employee wellbeing.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • I would definitely recommend the week: it gave an invaluable insight into the heart of the firm and what the firm has to offer. It provided a great networking opportunity and the chance to speak to current employees. It also allowed us to assess whether we would fit into the firm if we were to be offered the training contract.

    5/5
