Good balance of on-site work and work in office, I enjoyed the aspect of learning on the job. When I first joined the company everyone was very friendly and welcoming. The placement always ranged with different activities and a range of courses were available for me to attend at my own leisure if applicable to my area of work.
I thoroughly enjoyed my placement year. The placement year enabled me to take what I had learned in my first two years at university and put into practice in an enterprise. Every day during my placement I was learning new skills and improving on my current skills. During my placement I had the opportunity to work with and learn from subject matter experts, helping improve my current skillet and learn many new skills. Even though I had projects to do, There was multiple opportunities to go and learn about the company as a whole.
I very much enjoyed my time at Network Rail. Even as a student, I was entrusted with many responsibilities and I was able to take a lot of good experiences and learning from these responsibilities which is what every placement student hopes for.
The placement proved useful as an insight into what it is like working for a large corporation, however due to the size of Network Rail, my opportunity to participate in a wide variety of projects was rather limited. Network Rail as the 'client managers' for the government worked mostly in management rather than consulting or design.
I was given the opportunity to get involved with multimillion pound projects from day 1, to truly make a difference. Every team I worked with treated me as one of them, and I never felt like just a student.
Overall I have enjoyed my placement at Network Rail. There is a great balance between challenges within my role as well as many opportunities outside my role to get involved in. At times, like any jobs, there are peaks and troughs with the work, but there is usually something around the corner to get your teeth stuck into.
On the whole it was a beneficial experience. I hadn't worked full time before I took this role and I learned what it's like to work with a large diverse team on a daily basis. I learned that the business has a wide range of functions which all impact each other.Unfortunately I was not based anywhere near the location stated on my employment contract, and I've only actually been to that location twice in 12 months.
At the beginning of my placement, I absolutely hated it as I felt it hard to fit into the office lifestyle. What didn't help was the lack of face to face interaction with my host manager. It took 5 months to get my first face to face with him but as soon as he realised I was struggling with learning and finding things to do, he stepped in and handed me a few contacts to meet up with. From that point on wards, I have enjoyed my placement and I have decided to stick it out on the gradscheme. I love the fact that I get to travel across different parts of the UK and that I get to interact with different people on an everyday basis from suppliers to internal contacts.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my placement year, not only have I been involved in challenging projects across the organisation, but been given the opportunity to explore areas outside of my day job such as visiting our fleets to gain further knowledge of the work we complete on a daily basis.
Bloody boring and learnt nothing apart from how to work like a robot. EVERYDAY routines: copy and paste ballest data to an excel file from each depots then send out to different stakeholders, identify the ballest delivery patterns and manage the ballest orders to be delivered on site.
The internship was enjoyable and gave a good insight into what working in finance is like. I had two 5 week placements in two different finance teams. Also site visits were organised so we could see more of what the business does and we had talks with other finance areas to improve our business understanding.
I have enjoyed my placement to a great extent. They has been a lot on offer for me, ranging from making visits up and down the country to attending industry events. Everyone I have emailed met my requests and were very helpful as they would usually attach relevant documents with their emails.

It was a very enjoyable time spent. There was lots of work to get on with that was suitable to my knowledge base. The team dynamic meant that boring days where jobs were menial and repetitive were still good days to work. It was also enjoyable because I was given freedom to do jobs in the way I saw fit and also use intuition to progress the format and direction of the work.
I loved having my placement at Network Rail, from the start I was given exciting tasks to further my understanding of the industry. As I completed each small project, I would be moved swiftly onto projects of a much larger scale including the opportunity to create a new system of work that will be used a long time after I leave. I liked it so much that I am looking at Graduate jobs here.
For most of the year I was working in the mailbox in Birmingham, here I did not get much/any work even after asking. I did get some, but from another team which whilst is good to learn different areas it was not good on the organisation's part. I now spend most of my time in the depot where I am given a lot more work to do and the atmosphere is great.
