    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. You get to learn a lot about the formula 1 industry and see things which most wouldn't get close to! Its also valuable in the sense that you learn a lot and are given responsibility to show you are valued. The perks of the job are particularly enjoyable!

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt valued by my colleagues. You are given a lot of responsibility which demonstrates this. You are expected to learn a lot very fast and after the handover period is over the transition is expected to be seamless. You will be respected by even the senior members of staff making it a friendly place to work.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Supervisors are always happy to help you when they can. They will not only assist you, but will push you to apply any knowledge you already have in order for you to come up with a solution yourself and develop your understanding. Since the work force are friendly and they understand your lack of experience, the guidance is good.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the industry, how busy you are varies a lot. There will be routine tasks to complete however at any point new jobs may arise meaning you drop what you are doing to meet the demand before picking up the original tasks after. Even when work was complete, there was always additional work available if I asked for it.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • There was a large amount of responsibility given especially given the lack of experience on the job. You will be required to liaise both internally and externally with different departments, vendors and customers. Furthermore, the projects you are given bear a large impact on your department and the impact you have is clear.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Coming from a maths background, my degree was largely irrelevant to my job role as a financial accountant. Having said that I feel the skills I have learnt will help me a lot in future jobs and when completing professional exams if and when I decide to do so. Hopefully they will also help in my final year of studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • 4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was well organised. Since receiving the offer, HR kept in touch and organised a visit day to meet the other interns and even helped with house viewings. When arriving, it was clear there was a four week handover where I would learn all bout the role and my responsibilities. After that there were quarterly reviews with my manager to evaluate my performance.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company does not directly invest in your training towards any professional exams despite it being a requirement for the majority of the full time roles. However there is a four week handover to ensure you are up to speed with your tasks. You do get to develop your skills a lot and the amount you learn over a short space of time is surprising.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I believe the prospects will be good. Mercedes is a global company so I imagine most employers will appreciate you working there for a year. Also, Formula 1 is largely commercialised sport so many people will be aware of the team especially with the recent successes. Graduate opportunities are available within the firm however there isn't an intake every year for all departments therefore you have to be lucky to join at the right time.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social life was good. Nights out and lunches were frequently organised by the students which were all friendly. The company even organised a bowling night when we first started to help us make friends with the other students. Other activities included karting, football and cycling. Overall everyone was friendly and up for going out to socialise.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living is fairly reasonable with most people paying around £350 per month for inclusive facilities in a shared house however it varies depending on what you want. The majority of people live in either Northampton or Market Harborough and have a 10/15 minute commute however there are smaller villages closer by.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • 4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were many activities to get involved with. These included football, cycle rides, karting and others. Anyone new attending is welcomed and annual tournaments are even held in some cases where you might get to face the other fourmla 1 teams. There are usually emails or newsletters circulated to keep you aware of any activities going on.
