    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed working with everyone on my team - very welcoming environment to new starts and interns. Occasionally, one would meet workers that were too busy to answer questions but that is one of the challenges that I believe anyone in any firm will have to accommodate for.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by fellow interns as well as everyone in the Engineering Department. They treated me with the same respect as anyone else, asked if I was interested in joining their after-work activities and at the same time any opinions I brought to the table were not discarded but taken into serious consideration.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was allocated a buddy, had 1 to 1s with both my project's Line Managers on a weekly basis, as well as a biweekly 1 to 1 with the Head of the Engineering Department to ensure I was on track. All of them would frequently check up on me, and remained very accessible through phone and e-mail to respond to my queries.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Being a 3 month internship, and having 2 projects to work on, a lot of time was spent getting to know different departments and the ways that the systems worked. Working from 8 to 5 was frequently not enough with work having to be done at home. In hindsight, better planning could have eased the pressure.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given two projects that had savings potential of over £400,000 p.a. - big projects. My line managers expected me to use the support and facilities to contact different business units, benchmark with P&G plants all around the world and deliver tangible results and savings by the end of the internship.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I will definitely take a lot of project management skills into my university. Also respecting some of the work processes involved to consider all the factors and some of the root causes to these problems is useful for gap analysis, that can be used in any problems tackled.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very lively, lots of work done within the office. Good coffee machine, the team would celebrate birthdays as well by bringing in snacks. Open office so can always pop by managers desk and ask questions - not that hierachical.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Mostly well organised internship. There was a bit of a delay with some of the work attire provided but overall all interns were taken care of quite well.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Did not have the opportunity to experience this.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • If you succeed in meeting deliverables, it is highly likely to have a future with the firm.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • All the fellow placement students had a good sense of humour. Had a good few nights out and caught a couple of movies.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheap

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Grays is not very big and not much nightlife available. Very close to London so not too bad.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was football, and some of the graduate new starts used to organise mini golf or something once in a while. Opportunities are there if you look for them, or start them.

    4/5
