    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Most placement I heard of are either all experimental or desktop work, where students tend to only "do, do, do". From my experience here, it is well organised and each placement student has his/her own very project, where we need to go our own way and have many chances to approach challenges. I see my placement very worth while, although it is not particularly uses all the academic knowledge acquired from university but still opens a fresh eye to how each academic skills can be applied to in the real industry.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Very valued. Each person I've interact with up to now have been very friendly and are not withdrawn from questions. Colleagues are very out going and easy to talk to, the working environment is definitely stress/pressure driven due to it. If you need help or advice, it's only an ask away!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support here is as available as 123. When I have concerns I am able to approach my supervisor in an instant. If there are laboratory issues, site technicians are very happy to help. Any questions on regards to specific topics, I can easily find out an answer by a simple call, sometimes the person you're talking to may even be on the other side of the world! The managers here are very open to incoming questions and love supporting each other by providing the right source of information or directing you in the right way. The support here are inevitably abundant.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Company tend to strive for the best. Work schedule are very flexible, it can be as busy as I wish to be or the opposite but of course follow tightly with targets and goals. Each day may consist of laboratory work or data analysis, or both, it is all down to the personal choice whichever suits you to achieve and go beyond your project objectives in the best and comfortable way.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The change from Academia to industry (P&G) was a big jump. In university, whatever the lecture tell you to do, you do. As in the industry, although I have a target to meet but the intermediate steps are worked and thought through majority on my own. That doesn't mean that are no supports or advice but the responsibility given is the right amount for a professional employee.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills developed are almost uncountable, they are not only in technical but also in people, mind and agility. Improving people skills not only help with the communication with professional, also the interacting skills in confidence, speech with general public. Changing mindset and perspective helps me to see situations in a wider angle and processing ideas or comments in a more efficient fashion. Up lifting the power of agility sows greatly into personal discipline and learn to embrace changes, adaptable and flexible to unexpected issues.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere are fun and uplifting. Everyone are cheerful and laughs are not hard to find. We honor people with celebration and value people with praises. With the atmosphere here, it not only helps to push oneself forward despite general work pressure, it also propels you to see past the current challenges and overcome them.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship are well saturated with learning sessions, project goal planning, company social, weekly 1:1 supervisor meetings and quarterly review with manager. There are no hiccups or clashes between them, whereas it the smooth flow of schedule helps me to stay on track and enjoy myself.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There are well enough training platform available in all topics for us to choose from. Ranging from online, to meeting discussions, to conference and Full day courses. The amount of training are more than enough and would be impossible to attend all if I wish to. The training involves not only academic knowledge and technical skills but also training for personal well being such as sporting courses, private medical supporter and psychological appointments. These training sows for a long way in life and definite improves the brightness within oneself.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • With the pace I'm improving in all direction, the chances are large by the end of the placement. Even more, the company uses the placement as a portal to see if the candidate fits with the company, oppositely for student to see the company suits them. Personally saying, I would love work for Proctor and Gamble.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There are no levels within the friendship, whether peer, supervisor or manager. We enjoy work life together, help and supporting each other aiming for the same goal to success for the well being of the company. Outside work, we get to have tours, trips and meals for celebration or just general "hang outs". I feel free here and it's always a breath of fresh air here meeting new people.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area are energizing, not just the city itself but the people; everyone are friendly and cheerful. You will not find a person that hasn't have a good sense of humor. The living cost in this area is very reasonable, with the available super stores and close to city centre, all purchases ranging from food to fashion are competitively cheap.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • If I am to go past city centre on any nights during the week, not one of the nights are not packed with crowds of people. Restaurant and food chains opens to late and bars have a wide range of selections. With this saying, it's like the city is alive!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • They are many sports centre, media playgrounds, music activities, social clubs available to join and be a part with. I myself are now part of a great charity helping vulnerable people, a gymnastics clubs and a lovely local Church whom works side by the local community. Life outside work is filled with colour.
