The Role
ASOS design placement gave me the opportunity to experience all aspects of the design process, within many of their departments of womenswear own brand. I felt like a valued member of the team and that my opinion mattered. I was given my own daily responsibilities and each day was different. I worked as an assistant to designers and heads of design with duties varying from artworks, colourways, trend research to fabric and trim shopping. I was also given individual projects that contributed towards press days and the asos magazine which was really fun.
Working in a very busy environment the designers and heads of design were very appreciative of everything i did. I learnt to do certain duties quickly but to a high standard as well.
I met on a regular basis with my head of design, communication was key, i made sure i emailed or met up with her to discuss any issues or timetable for the week. As well as report back on progress with tasks i was given.
Each day was very busy more so around press days. There was always something to be done.
I was given alot of responsibility with daily duties in terms of looking after trend boards, magazines, samples ready for meetings and rack ups, as well as working of garments and artworks for various designers. Trend packs were also very important, creating these and delivering them to the heads of design, merch and buying. it was nice to feel like more than just an intern working for asos, you were treated like a design assistant.
I feel after working at asos i have a much better understanding of the fashion industry, as well as for an online fashion retailer. i learnt so much about the design process, more than what i have done at degree level. additionally the way the company works in creating trends and looks for these. I gained great practise in the use of photoshop, mood boards, colouring and artworks that can be applied to garments. As well as many more skills. Asos also offered masterclasses in other areas of the business so it was great to learn about departments such as buying, merchandising, creative and production.
The Company
Everyone loved their job at asos, it was always a happy atmosphere. Although everyone worked extremely hard in the office, you were definitely rewarded for your efforts.
ASOS were very experienced in their set up for work placement students, the whole programme offered support and advise whenever you needed it, as well as introductions to the company and building, your department, master classes as mentioned before, meet and greet lunch with the CEO of ASOS Nick Robertson.
I was treated like any other member of the company, it didn't matter that i was an intern, apart from the solely intern aimed classes, we all received the same introduction on the first day, and everyone at asos was keen for me to do well and settle in quickly, my progress was reviewed on a regular basis.
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
After interning at ASOS i would love to return there as a graduate, the team keep in touch after you have left, and are so friendly with communication for future careers within the company or any vacancies they have advertised.
The Culture
I was able to attend the summer party at asos which was a great atmosphere to be in, everyone was happy and excited to celebrate the success of the company. the design team would often invite me for drinks or social events however living outside of london made this difficult at times.
Working in london social aspects would be slightly more expensive, i actually live outside of the london area in the south, and so the most expensive aspect for me was living at home and commuting into work. although loving my job as i did this wasnt too much of an issue for me.
i didn't experience the nightlife aside from the summer party which was all expenses paid.
As mentioned before everyone was lovely and always invited you out, their was also a social commitee set up whilst i worked there to encourage group nights out, however this was a bit difficult for me living outside of london.
