The Role

Role Description

Working in a team to deliver a project over a ten week period, based in one of the divisions within UK IT or Group IT and Commercial.
Meeting people, learning and researching, and creating a technological tool for use by the team in the future.
Projects are offered by several departments and the interns are allowed to choose which one they would like to do on the second day.

  1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  2. Fantastic experience, really good fun. A steep learning curve which provided challenge and engagement.


  3. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  4. Very valued, really felt part of the team and everyone was incredibly welcoming and supportive, and took a genuine interest in my experience


  5. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  6. The support was fantastic, both from our designated stream heads and from my individual placement manager and head of department.


  7. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  8. Good balance between project work and intern development activities such as presentations, insights and workshops.


  9. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  10. Responsible for delivery of a project, with sufficient support from my manager and team. Was given responsibility to manage time, meet with external contacts and structure my project.


  11. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  12. Fantastic development, with lots of opportunities for expanding skillset, with workshops, presentation skills and company-specific knowlegde.


  13. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  14. Varies from department to department, but my office was sociable but with a hardworking attitude - a good balance.


  15. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  16. Well organised with a great balance between project and development, and the ability to shape my experience built in.


  17. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  18. Lots of investment, from getting to spend time with senior leaders, to workshops and courses aimed at learning and developing skills.

  21. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  22. Clear talent pathways, and the internship is definitely a step straight into the graduate scheme - impress and there is likely to be a job offer.


  23. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  24. The interns met up daily for lunch, and organised social events for ourselves. The current graduates also put on some events for us in the first couple of weeks to get to know each other and the area.


  25. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  26. Property rental was organised and paid for by the company, which was immensely valuable. Based in the centre of Edinburgh, so reasonably expensive to go out (although much cheaper than London!)


  27. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  28. Edinburgh is fantastic, so much to see and do!


  29. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  30. Edinburgh fringe festival! Must see!


  31. In addition to these questions, is there any extra information you would like to leave about your experiences on your work placement that other students may be interested in?
