    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Enjoyed it very much, including the opportunity to work in two different locations. The work was varied and interesting, and I was given a lot of responsibility. It was brilliant to work closely with other departments so I could see how they function.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Most people are very friendly all the time and value the work I do, around the building people are polite and pleasant, it has been a very nice environment to work in.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • A lot of help and support from the team and my supervisor, but also encouraged to solve probkens and look for answers myself.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Workload varied, some days very little came in, and other days I was very busy! However I always found things to do, or ways to further my knowledge.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Often my manager would be away on meetings, or very busy, and so I had a lot of responsibility, being the main contact for regulatory. I tried to solve problems on my own where I could, which was scary at first, but very rewarding.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The placement has given me a lot of confidence which i can apply to many different situations, including group work within my degree. It has also greatly furthered my knowledge on food legislation and general technical knowledge, which will benefit my studies.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • People are always friendly and laughing, it is a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There was also a lot of chocolate to try, and informal events to participate in, such as cultural days.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was well organised, I fit straight into a recognised job role, so people were always contacting me for reulatory advice, as if I had always been there! I had systems access from almost day one, so was wonderfully organised.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I had several development reviews during my time there, and the work was always varied, to challenge and develop my skills and competency.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing- they have great graduate schemes, and direct hire opportunities are also possible. It is a great company to work for, with lots of benefits and facilities!

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • At my location, there were not many placement students, however I did meet several people in my first location, and am still in touch with them now!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Depending on the type of accommodation, it could be very cheap, if you look for rented rooms in the suburbs of Birmingham. City living can be expensive, it is always good to look for spare rooms.Socialising can also be quite cheap, it's all about choosing the right places to go!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • In Birmingham the nightlife is brilliant, there is something to suit all tastes in food, drink and music.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There was a gym to join, with classes before, after and during work hours. People also regularly met up outside of work to go to the cinema or for food.
