    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • As a performance media intern my role was to assist with paid search which included social and search ads. I learnt all about the difference in social ads and search ads and the types of campaigns we use to heighten our ROAS (return on ad spend) for all luxury brands. I also assisted the Couture team with PR and helped manage reports, search for new influencers that allligned with our brand values and research current trends, influencers and competitors to ensure that we were staying relevant.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have learnt so much over the past 10 weeks including: - Paid search (Social, affiliates and search) - Types of campaigns we use to heighten our revenue, including discovery ads, p-max, DBA/DABA ads and lots more - Understood how to use excel effectively to extrapolate date (including using pivot tables) - The use of different online influencer platforms including Power Bi and Traackr to research and make decisions - Assisted with content captions and understand how to meet the tone of voice of different brands such as Kiehls - The use of multiple reporting platforms that drove decision making

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Due to it being only 10 weeks- I did sometimes feel that I was given work that no one else wanted to do (admin tasks, best practise documents etc) which helped me progress in a way, but on the other hand, felt like I could have been involved with more projects that the year long placements were allocated

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • On the one hand, I was given lots of support for my tasks, however I don't think 1-1s were taken seriously or took as a priority. Sometimes I felt like I had to fend for myself, which in hindsight may have increased my proactivity.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Company culture as a whole was good. Most people were really friendly. I thought the first couple of weeks as an intern, I felt that I was being looked down on by a couple of people higher up but that stopped quite soon on when I had proved myself to the wider team. However, there was one individual who I indirectly worked under, who even though I was working in his team and had an initial chat/intro at the beginning of my time here with (so he knew my name and my position very well) he showed no interest in me. As a manager, I would have expected him to at least say hello, check in on me or just stop for a quick catch up, instead of ignore me. I always was polite to him and the wider team so it upset me that there was no reciprocation. Saying this, I thought all other managers were very approachable and welcoming of me and I really appreciate all the help, support and guidance they showed me throughout my time at L'Oréal.

  • 7. Would you recommend L'Oreal to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to L'Oreal
  • Don't expect that just because you have a Summer internship that you have an automatic graduate scheme. It's just as competitive, if not more competitive than being an external. I would also suggest that even though you have been put in a team, always speak to different people across the business and learn different things. It is really good to get your name out there not just in your team. You are randomly allocated into a team within the job you apply for and therefore you may not enjoy, so it's good to be open and learn what other parts of digital for example do and if it would be something you would consider pursuing as a career in the future.
