    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Various different tasks are assigned to me. I have engaged in many business as usual tasks, such as running daily reporting and weekly reporting through leveraging data using Python and SQL. I also spend a lot of time booking in meetings with various team members or external team members in the company to learn about other business areas. I also attend other meetings within risk and compliance and shadow other areas to learn more about them.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My previous experiences gave me insight into SQL and Excel and PowerPoint. I definitely built on these in my time here, where I was also introduced to Python and Notepad + +. Also, I have built on many soft skills, such as networking, elevator pitching, concise speaking and teamwork. Also it has been interesting to take initiative of your own time, trying to ask for opportunities such as shadowing other departments and asking for more time - fun!

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • I would say yes and no. I did gain access to some tasks, and given responsibility for various business as usual tasks, alongside encouragement to network. I would say that 10 weeks is a short amount of time, and to gain high levels of responsibility was not really my expectation. I do think i could have been given more responsibility and more tasks but my team was also going through restructuring, which makes it difficult

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I would say everyone was very supportive and would always answer any question i would have. It was also lovely that the atmosphere here is genuinely lovely, and allows any intern to reach out to any individual at any level to gain insight. My manager consistently took out time to discuss any topics again and many of my meetings overran as I had multiple questions - where no individual made me feel bad for which was encouraging.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The atmosphere boasts (and rightly so) a very friendly and open culture. There is a big focus on mental health and wellbeing, alongside lots of resources to attain and maintain these. Also, it is very welcoming. Any questions i have will always be answered and I have never had any member of any team that has not wanted and agreed to put in catch ups to learn more about other areas of business which is great.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have learned a lot and really enjoyed meeting various people. i would say that it is hard as my team was going through some restructuring, so there was not a lot of stability and i felt as though i was waiting for the dust to settle a little so that i could gain more real insight. i appreciate this is out of the firms control in terms of internship experience, but it did affect the experience.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to abrdn
  • In your interview and assessment centre, be personable and chatty! show your competency but also be yourself and show that you are a enjoyable person to be around. it is a friendly environment, so be inclusive in any group activity and make sure in the interview it comes across as a conversation which is interesting for not only you, but also the interviewer. Research the corporate culture and i would say that is true to the firm.
