    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • In our team we manage the supplier/retailer relationship for our accounts, having regular meetings with our retailers to answer any queries. I managed their monthly promotions for each category (skin/men/hair/cosmetics/sun), and briefed marketing with any branded artwork required for particular promotions, whilst also being involved in their range updates/changes.

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • During my year I have learnt so many new skills, for example prioritisation and time management which became vital for me to be able to do my role effectively. My communication skills have massively improved, and now feel I have an understanding of how to flex my communication style depending on the audience, whether that be a difficult external conversation, speaking with senior managers internally or talking to my fellow interns.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • In my role I was given lots of responsibility, with me directly communicating with external buyers on a daily basis and managing their issues. I also deal with the whole promotional process which has allowed me to have a greater understanding of both how retailers and suppliers operate, and learn so many skills associated with the process. I also independently work with the marketing team to work with them to create promotional artwork requested by the retailer.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My direct line manager has provided me with constant support during my internship, both with work and in my personal life. We have weekly 1:1 meetings to discuss what I am working on and to give me the opportunity to ask for help where I need it. Throughout my internship my manager and team have always been so supportive and are on hand to help whenever they can.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • L'Oréal is a very social company, everyone is very friendly and always happy to help and chat! This makes it a very nice and supportive working atmosphere whilst feeling very much feeling part of a team who all help each other to succeed. Although fast paced, this allows the office to be more relaxed with a sense of trust that everyone will work hard within their roles.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I have loved my placement year at L'Oréal, and I have really enjoyed experiencing working within the corporate world in an industry which was completely new to me. I have learnt so many transferable skills which I know will be so important in any future career, from communication, teamwork and even excel and presenting skills. I have also had the opportunity to attend some amazing socials and events which have made my year even better!

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to L'Oreal
  • Research the L'Oréal and its brands as well as the wider industry, so in the interview you can show an existing knowledge of the company and what they do. Also make sure to show off your personality with your interests outside of academics in the application as the company is very people focused.
