    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role as an 'Operational Risk Intern' involves overseeing different elements of risk within the business. The key elements of oversight include logging incidents & events which occur, setting and monitoring actions for Heads of Departments, as well as ensuring regular controls are being carried out. The role often involves co-ordinating administrative tasks on an adhoc basis, as well as preparing reports and slide decks.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • From the role, I have further developed my skills in scheduling, practising and managing my workload. The role has tasks which are routine and to be completed on a weekly or monthly basis, but this needs to be managed alongside tasks which could arise at any time. Communication within the team is essential, which is built over time and occurs within an office environment, as well as when remote working.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • During my placement, I was given a lot of responsibility which was developed and built over time. This started with the responsibility of tasks which were completed alongside my line manager, which progressed to completion on an individual basis, and then progressed onto training another member of the team. The degree of responsibility increased later on during my placement, where my critical thinking and evaluative skills were tested.

My line manager allowed me to work at a pace in which I felt comfortable at, in order to lay the foundations to a proper understanding of the role.
