    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The duration of my role (10 weeks) meant that it was largely project-based. This meant that the day-to-day was very varied. Some days would be spent doing administration tasks, some days I would be researching and analysing data, some days were focused on meetings and presentations, and I even had the opportunity to organise and lead an event.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My presentation and time-management skills have developed significantly in my role, due to increased exposure to presenting and high-pressure tasks with deadlines. I have learned new skills, such as prioritisation, which previously I have not consciously had to exercise, and data analysis skills, which is useful in the workplace but I do not utilise at university. Furthermore, I have also developed general career/corporate skills, through my increased knowledge of the business and different functions.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship. This included in administration tasks that I looked after entirely during my role, leading and organising meetings, organising and leading an event for over 25 people, making and presenting my findings on different topics, and overall being trusted to use my own initiative with organising my time and tasks.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My line manager and wider teams gave me support during my internship when I needed it, but also allowed me to be independent and have responsibility. I knew that whenever I needed help I could ask with no judgement.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • The company culture suited me personally very well. It is very extroverted and personable, which may not be ideal for everyone. It is also a culture that focuses on flexibility and well-being, meaning I felt like I could maintain a healthy work-life balance, and the company's hybrid policy meant that I could work from home, which for me prevented fatigue. The atmosphere in the office is very friendly and open.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship. I feel like the scope of working in Human Resources has allowed me to experience a wide range of functions in the business, which is useful in my career development. I have also been able to work on projects that I am passionate about, which is very motivating, and the responsibility I was given made my work feel meaningful. My team and other interns were so friendly, making the social aspect enjoyable as well.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to L'Oreal
  • I would suggest networking and connecting with as many people as possible, and take every opportunity that becomes available - this has allowed me to discover aspects of the business that perhaps I would not have expected to enjoy. I would also advise to be super open when you need support to ensure you are enabled to get the most out of your role.
