    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • At the beginning of the internship, I was assigned a team an a mentor within that team that would act as my 'buddy' and help me with any issues I was having. I was given then given software development tickets to complete and would attend 'stand up' meetings each day with my team where we would discuss our progress on our tasks. Any time you were struggling you could contact your mentor for support.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I learned about industry scale software development, gained experience with a range of technologies like React JS, Javascript and more. I also learned how to present and discuss my work effectively to team members. The best thing was just seeing the process of what it takes to put your code into production on a large scale website and listen to experienced members of the team talk about the complex tasks they were completing.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • After my knowledge was gauged with small, independent tasks, I moved onto doing tasks that were actually being put into production on the website. These of course need to be completed to a high standard, as any issues could cause problems on the live website. You are given responsibility to complete these yourself, however you do have a mentor available to you if you are struggling. I liked that your work was actually being used.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I had a mentor or 'buddy' available to me whenever I needed it. We would meet every morning after our team stand-up meetings and discuss my progress and if there were any issues I was having. I also had weekly 1-1 meetings with my manager, where they would make sure I felt supported and would answer any questions I had. Expedia really made me feel like they were investing in my future.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Expedia is a very inclusive company. There were regular social events and also events aimed at bringing about a more inclusive, welcoming environment. As interns we had 3 social events which would begin with free drinks on the rooftop, which had two bars. There was also no pressure from anyone to complete your work, it was very much up to you to keep up so you never felt like anyone was breathing down your neck.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I loved my internship and would really urge people to apply to Expedia. The support I was given was amazing, I really felt valued by my team and I couldn't have asked for a better welcome into the working world. I'm sad that the internship has ended and I'll miss working for the company. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did.
