    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • I am a mobile engineer intern, helping work on features on Expedia's native iOS apps. This involves daily standup meetings where we discuss our progress with the team, and using tools such as Jira to organise our projects and workflow. Most of the day involves working on current tickets, which are tasks derived from current projects in the team. I also often catch up with various team members to discuss ongoing work and potential strategies and fixes to issues. There are also occasional meetings with the team to learn about or present different projects.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I have acquired many skills from this internship, including hard skills such as new languages, frameworks and technologies including Swift (iOS development), XCode, GraphQL, JSON and Jira. One very important skill I have built on is being able to understand and contribute to large-scale industrial codebases like the company's repositories. I have also acquired many soft skills, such as teamwork in an organisation, communication in an industry-based context, project planning and time-management.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes, I was assigned a task to work on a very key feature in one of the company's apps - the reviews feature. Of course, there was plenty of guidance and support to make sure I understand how the codebase worked and what changes to make.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Plenty of support and guidance. There was an initial bootcamp to get interns familiar with the company's way of building software and they tools they used. We also had a navigator to guide us through the entire internship and how to approach the work.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Expedia Group
  • Perhaps learn a bit about the Expedia Group's current initiatives and technologies they are working on. Also, if they know what technologies they will be using e.g. iOS or Android development, then maybe start learning the basics of the programming languages.
