    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • A stand up, where the team talks about what we've been doing individually, and what we plan to do moving forwards. After that, I continue work on my tickets, which include adding features to the website and bug fixes. I also address any reviews of my completed tickets before they merge into main, and test other interns features.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I had very little webdev experience going in, but have learnt a lot about React, typescript, styled components, Formik, Jest, and Asp.net for databases.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • The code I have written is being used by an actual client. I was given the responsibility to design database migrations, and pages with their own data flows. I could also raise my own tickets if features were missing.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The first 25% was entirely based on training up the interns to a good level, and there was always one or two senior developers on our projects that we could ask questions to.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Ghyston is a very casual company. I enjoyed playing games of Smash Bros and Mario Kart at lunch, pool during short breaks, and would always enjoy the Friday trips to the pub. Twice we ran a board games evening, and there are many other morale events scattered through the weeks. Everyone is approachable, as the hierarchy is very flat, which helped me feel relaxed.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Ghyston
  • Be honest about your experience in tech before applying. They will modify the interview based on this. If you haven't done much tech before they will ask more logic based questions to see how well you could skill up.
