    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Much of the internship was very self-paced - although I was assigned to a team, they were very flexibile with letting me assist and explore working with other teams and shadowing other service lines I was interested in. I attended daily standups for my team and others I worked with, helped with PMO tasks and putting together documents for various projects I was involved in, and had the freedom to get a taste of whatever areas of EY I was interested in.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I developed both my soft and hard business skills duing my time at EY.My team's project was based around the implementation of a software for a client, so I completed courses and work familiarising myself with this software, developing my technical skills, as well as helping with management and coordination of the team, which developed my communication and people skills. Networking was a huge part of my internship, and I've developed strong links with colleagues, seniors and other interns and learned how to make the most of these connections!

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • My counsellor specifically ensured I would not be overloaded with work so I could tailor the internship to my interests and get the most out of it for myself. This meant that although I wasn't assigned much responsibility, I could seek it for myself, and I did manage to find myself roles in very important projects and contributed to some key deliverables in multiple teams across the business. I really enjoyed the autonomy I had, but I appreciate this may not suit everyone.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • My team mostly worked from home and my placement was during an extremely busy time for them, so I did feel quite alone and unsupported at times, but my buddy and counsellor in my team were extremely friendly and always made themselves available to me when they were around, either over Microsoft Teams or when they were in the office. They were able to answer any questions I had about EY and made me feel at home from my first day in the office.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • I immediately felt at home and welcomed from my first day in the office, even though I was terrified of the corporate culture beforehand. My buddy and counsellor were extremely friendly and introduced me to the whole team very quickly, so I felt like I was part of a family very soon into my internship. My team had some very fun socials (and lots of free food!) and I was even invited to join a few runs with the EY running club while I was there.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship even more than I thought I would, gaining valuable work experience as well as long-lasting friendships and connections. Being part of EY was an extremely rewarding experience, and I believe I've been able to leave a lasting impression on it, as it has left one on me, being an integral part of my introduction to the working world and the consulting industry. I definitely have a much clearer view of what working in consulting is like now, which is exactly what I aimed to achieve when I joined - the internship has definitely helped me in deciding what I want my future career path to be.

  • 7. Would you recommend EY to a friend?
  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Don't be alarmed or put off by the lengthy application process or lack of replies to your emails/queries by the recruitment team, you will get to the end eventually and the internship will be worth it! Also take into account the fact that the internship will be pretty laid back, unlike a lot of other Big 4/finance internships - whether or not this is a pro or con is up to your goals.
