    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My day-to-day work involved using our transaction data in SQL queries and R notebooks to create new statistics and then visualise these. I mostly interacted with my team via slack due to the internship being remote, with a weekly team catch-up and 2 weekly 121s with my manager on zoom, as well as ad-hoc zoom calls for specific topics I felt very responsible for my project and was able to present it to senior leaders myself towards the end of my internship. In addition to my project work, I was also given a few analyses to perform for our stakeholders that then gave me the chance to present these to them.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • I've developed my communication skills to ensure my written communication is very clear and to be more proactive at taking the initiative in meetings. I've learned how to use SQL and several Python packages for manipulating data, as well as developing my confidence using R. I've also had the chance to see how industrial statistical models can be created, deployed and managed, particularly with teams in different timezones. I generally learned more about working in a professional team and communicating and managing expectations between team members.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Yes - I felt very responsible for the direction my project took after I had been onboarded to my team's purpose and got to a level of SQL that I could be exploring the data independently. It was clear throughout the internship how my project could directly improve the companies marketing processes and even that there was significant executive interest in the outcomes I found, which eventually led to an estimate that it could improve the spending of $50-70 million each year.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • I received a lot of very effective training at the start of the internship mainly through my line manager, which got me up to speed with using SQL and R within the company's infrastructure within a week and a half. After that, my line manager was very helpful for helping find people who could show me another interesting part of the business and help me learn more about it. My wider team and buddies were also very open to helping me and helped significantly with my support and guidance.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Unfortunately I completely my internship remotely, so don't have the best idea about the general company atmosphere but from what I experienced, there was a lot of effort to make sure people felt included despite the remote work environment, and every new person I met in a meeting made sure to be very welcoming. There were weekly remote intern socials as well as a few socials for my business area that both made it a lot easier to get to know more people outside of a more "working" setting.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I found the work I did very interesting, and will be very interested to see how the work I did in my project has been developed when I return for my graduate role. My team was very welcoming and made each day a pleasure. The company culture seemed very welcoming and enjoyable from what I saw during my internship. My internship vastly exceeded my internships in terms of how enjoyable it was and I am very happy to be returning

  • Yes

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Expedia Group
  • From what I remember of my interviews, your interviewers want to bring out the best in you and aren't looking to trip you up or catch mistakes. For example, I had a lot of coursework due right before my interview so hadn't done as in-depth of an analysis for the case study as I would have liked, but talking about the further investigation I would have done made for an interesting talking point during the interview.
