    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • My role on a day-to-day basis was to design and create new levels for game whilst also analysing data on existing game levels and tweaking those levels to fall in line with the correct difficulty we aim for. Projects vary in size and complexity and can involve either solo work or work with other level design team members.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • My existing level design skills have been greatly developed during my time on the placement due to the opportunity to practise and hone those skills in a professional environment and also thanks to the help and guidance of my team members, most of whom have been working in the industry for years. The role also involves a lot of meetings (1-on-1 and group) so my presentation skills have also improved.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • At no point did I feel overwhelmed with the responsibilities I was given. The internship started off quite slow and relaxed with plenty of time to learn how the company and my team worked as well as how to make levels for the game. As time went on, I was able to reach out and take on more responsibilities that I felt I could handle and was offered them too without pressure.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • The level of support from the Early Careers team, the game team and the level design team was huge. It's made very clear who go to for whatever reasons and I was assigned a 'buddy' to help me with learning the day-to-day processes and meetings. There are also plenty of online resources and guides for how to do things within the company.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • As my internship was entirely remote, I was unable to experience the in-person atmosphere of the team. However, in the various meetings (both small and large) with the team, every single person I met was incredibly friendly, happy and more than willing to help with anything they could. I found everyone had a generally relaxed attitude which helped to make the atmosphere feel comfortable and manageable, especially for a new joiner.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • As can probably be seen from my previous answers, I absolutely loved my internship! Not only was it an amazing learning experience in a stress-free environment, I was able to really practise and hone a lot of skills whilst genuinely enjoying the work I was doing. A big part of what interested me about working at King was having a direct influence on the game and audience and I really believe I have had that.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to King
  • My main piece of advice about applying to King is to not be worried by the size of the Company. With zero previous professional experience in the industry, I was scared that the workplace would be busy, stressfull and I may get swept away in everything - the opposite is what I found and I quickly ended up in a great situation where I was happy and confident in the work I was doing.
