    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • Software engineer that develops, maintains, and improves the speed and reliability of the Landing Experience team's code base. Daily standups in an agile way, retrospective meetings every other week, and other miscellaneous meetings to address initiatives and work to be done within the team. Work was split into tickets that I would carry out from start to finish before picking up the next.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • Yes. I learned a lot about functional programming which I was never taught in University. Additionally, this was my first time working in a real job environment so I learned a lot about how companies help their workers stay motivated and happy. I was able to develop my work ethic and consistency greatly throughout this placement, all thanks to the amazing support structure in place.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • Much more than I could have imagined, in a good way! I was very quickly thrown into the deep end (at my own request) working on real code that made verifiable changes on the user side, with positive results for the company. This only continued throughout the placement, where by the end I was working alongside other engineers debugging production databases and code.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • Daily standup meetings where I could share any issues I was having as well as my progress. Weekly support meetings with my manager where she would always listen to anything I might have to say, although I rarely had any problems. The support structure throughout this placement was amazing, I never felt lost in who to ask if I needed any help with any aspect of my placement. Tech issues were resolved swiftly.

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Whilst I joined during the height of Coronavirus and I was not able to spend time with the team in person, we still had games nights online and a very diverse, accepting atmosphere otherwise. Even with an age gap between me and my co-workers I still had fun collaborating and communicating with them on a daily basis.

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to Expedia Group
  • If you have the option, a hackathon is a great way to put yourself forward as a prospective candidate. A very hands-on approach to displaying your motivation and work-ethic.
