    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of the virtual experience and what was involved on a day-to-day basis.
  • On a day-to-day basis, the experience consists of project-related meetings (on Teams), as well as a multitude of interesting sessions such as catch-up (with the buddy/manager/team), learning (usually a specific topic), mental health, inclusion, social, etc. The rest of the time is to be devoted to the project itself. There is also a wide range of learning courses that can be explored on the portal, which help to familiarise with Centrica etc.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills or developed existing skills?
  • I have learnt a multitude of skills, going from using professional tools efficiently, (Teams, Outlook, Excel etc.) to tackling meetings with reps from external companies. The industry-specific skills are mostly theoretical, but will certainly facilitate practice when it comes. Internal training taught communication, wellbeing, and inclusion strategies - among others. In my role I am learning the practical side of different specific engineering aspects.

  • I believe Exciting is the word that best describes it. The diversity of roles and potential tasks, the flexibility in pursuing and developing them, the skills that would be acquired.. I found all this exciting, for such a business would allow to make a difference.

    Culture

  • 4. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • Friendly, active, supportive, and most of all - flexible. People are keen on sharing, teaching, collaborating and replying. Despite the virtual experience, the social activities (as well as technical sessions) allow people to connect with one another, to ask questions and share improvements.

    Your Impressions

  • 5. To what extent did you enjoy the virtual experience?
  • I find the virtual experience great, as it still offers the possibility to reach out to people, to connect, to learn and to share. From a time-management perspective, it may even be more effective than in-person work. On the other hand, a non virtual experience would have (potentially) allowed for the development of more industry-related practical skills. Given the short time of the internship, however, I believe that having it virtual works well.

  • 8. What tips or advice would you give to others applying to Centrica
  • Be proactive! Be prepared, know what you can offer and demonstrate it. Know your stream's conditions. I've also come to understand that it is as much about passion and being proactive as it is about analytical skills. Finally, read and act on the instructions Centrica provides before the Assessment Centre.
