    Overview

  • 1. Please give an overview of your role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis.
  • The internship we had in Summer 2021 was virtual, and it mainly involved learning about our service line at EY. Working in the Audit department of the Assurance service line, we learned about what the role entails through dialogue and Q&A sessions with business leaders at EY. We were also given a case study to work on, which we were meant to present to our mentor at the end of the programme.

    Skills

  • 2. Have you learnt any new skills, or developed your existing skills?
  • The skills that I was able to develop through this internship were teamwork and communication. To work on the case study that we were assigned, we were put into groups and made to work together on it. We then had to delegate work to each member of the team and work together to produce a coherent presentation for our mentor, and this required a lot of collaboration and communication to be accomplished in the internship.

    Responsibilities

  • 3. Were you given much responsibility during your placement / internship?
  • We were given the case study project to work on, which meant that we all had sufficient responsibility entrusted to us during this internship. We were then given guidance by our mentors as to how to approach the task. Mostly though, we were provided with the autonomy to complete the case study in whatever way we saw was best, with regular check-ins by our mentor. This gave us sufficient exposure to the business.

    Support & Guidance

  • 4. How much support and guidance did you receive during your placement / internship?
  • We had three levels of guidance and support, in ascending order. A buddy, mentor and partner. Each of them played a different role, but they were all very willing to share their experiences, provide guidance and to answer any of our burning questions. They were welcoming and supportive of us, and were accessible to us whenever we needed help.

  • How would you rate the support and guidance from the wider team?

    Culture

  • 5. What was the company culture and general atmosphere like?
  • EY has an excellent culture, with a very strong focus on its people. They have a firm commitment to developing its people through various programmes and schemes, so that we can be the best possible version of ourselves. There is a very welcoming atmosphere all round, as people are extremely friendly, and even with our line managers there's not a very hierarchal feeling. We had many leisure activities throughout the programme, albeit virtual.

    Your Impressions

  • 6. To what extent did you enjoy your placement / internship?
  • I enjoyed myself on this internship very much. The team that I was put in was very cooperative and we worked very well together to complete our tasks. The amount and type of work given was perfect for us in this internship. It provided us with sufficient opportunities to learn about what to expect in a full-time graduate role. The company culture has been excellent, and I would definitely like to come back to EY

  • 8. What advice would you give to others applying to EY
  • Research about the roles that are available, and zero in on one that you think would be the best fit for yourself, or the one that you think you would enjoy the most. Then, try to learn as much as you can by reading online or watching EY's recruitment videos about what EY is looking for in candidates for that role. Learn about EY's vision, values and think about how you can relate.
