    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very much, once the beginning of feeling overwhelmed disappeared it became very enjoyable. The work was very interesting and every day was a different day, you wouldn't know what you would be about to do. I got to go all over the company to all sorts of people, so for the curious mind wondering what's behind every locked door, most of the time I got to find out! It's just such a shame it got finished early due to covid.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Extremely, every single person I met was friendly. You obviously don't click with every single person you meet, but nobody was mean or offensive. Some people including everyone in department felt like a mini family, the CI (IT) Department have so many jokes together and sometimes baked goods are brought in..! Other departments also, lots of the people you meet you'll probably see a lot and get to know them; plus, who doesn't love the person who fixes your nagging IT issue? Even if you don't, everyone appreciates the effort

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever there was an issue, 9/10 times someone was available to answer questions. Even the really stupid questions, nobody judges you for asking questions; it's encouraged! My manager was super friendly and a great guy to work with, always ready to help. Especially his right hand CI Superman, had the answer to everything. With the Contact Centre, which all interns are forced into..... I had extreme problems with it and my manager simply helped me move to a different department. Really couldn't fault the support offered to me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • It really varied. Some days, I would be so busy I'd forget to go to the toilet until 5pm, but other days beating Minesweeper would be the highlight of the day. On average the days would have enough for a few email queries, and a couple desk visits. A majority of the work would be device handovers and if you planned it right, there was always a couple days a week when you could be busy. A good balance in my opinion

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot!! The two week handover between interns isn't enough for IT in my opinion, you have to learn all the software, all the admin, all the settings, and of course all the random problems that people would get. After the previous interns leave, all the problems are up to me to fix. At least the ones people ask me for, sometimes drop ins would go to the first person they see. You help people all the way from the Contact Centre up to the CEO himself! Definitely makes you feel important.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Well I couldn't fix my own computer beforehand, and now I know so many tips and tricks which are helpful in any job scenario. Being thrown in the deephand really taught me to adapt to new scenarios quickly and manage time properly, which is quite vital in my final year of university with a dissertation looming. It also taught me proficiency with a lot of different programs so I will be able to use a load of these skills after I graduate.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • There was usually a conversation going on somewhere if we weren't all in calls. Sometimes politics, the football, or usually some weird conversation I always ended up joining halfway through without context. It was brilliant! Everyone was a good laugh and up for conversation; super friendly and welcoming

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I rank this highly because I know to the normal student, what was created was pretty good but to me.. well I never joined in. With 50+ interns, there was a group chat created and most weeks people would get together on a Friday and go out to the clubs. Plenty of people to make friends with too. To the anti-partying student, it was pretty awful, but we're few and far between.
