    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement. Firstly, the office were all so lovely and always keen to pass on their years of experience and knowledge and it was a comfortable office environment to work in. There were around 30 interns in total most working in different departments, this was great as when you needed to go to a new department for whatever reason there was most probably be an intern you could speak to first. With GE being a huge company there was the typical office politics flying around.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Particularly as the year went on, I felt more and more valued this became particularly evident when I left, I hadn't realised how much I had picked up and therefore needed to pass on to the next intern. You are given a lot of responsibility to start with, which can be daunting but also encouraging as they instantly trust that you will do a good job.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I think personally I would have preferred a little more support particularly at the startof my placement, however I did feel like I gained a lot from just being chucked in at the deep end. I was given some pointers at the end of my placement to work on in my next job yet I wish I had been told of these during my placement so I could have had the opportunity to change. However there are 3 monthly reviews with your manager, and he is always there on a personal and work level if required. In addition I have had a lot of support since leaving my placement with CV's and graduation jobs.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the start of my placement I did have lots of days where I had nothing to do, however as time went on I became increasingly busy. I never stayed late because I had too much work , and it was certainly not expected of the interns to stay late. If I ever had too much work I often asked my fellow intern if he could help and vice versa. We both helped each other.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given loads of responsibility, half way through the year I asked my manager about amending a process and he was up for the change helped me implement the process. The process is now completely different all through a web tool that I implemented, although I had lots of support it was my responsibility. This could be daunting but it was also really valuable whilst applying to new jobs.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I do Business Management with Finance so, I wouldn't say my job massively impacted on my degree however I am noticing through final year aspects that were relevant. I did base my dissertation on a project I did on placement so from that point of view it did make a difference to my studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Where the project management office was, was always very quiet but a lovely together atmosphere. The office was lovely, everyone got on and this is certainly an aspect that I miss very much. All the members in the office were always keen to help, from the little issues like working the printer through to showing you around the shop floor.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I'd say pretty well organised but could be better. The induction day was good and very informative however was very full on for a first day. When it came to our year to run the induction day our aim was to keep is a clam and friendly as possible yet informative too. I had a week to learn the job in the first place which was not long enough but due to my previous intern going on holiday it couldn't be extended.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I didn't have the opportunity to gain an extra qualifications like some other interns in other departments however, there wa often lunch time sessions whether people either internally or externally would talk about aspects of the business from lean talks to the site manager talking. This gave me the opportunity to understand more about the business.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Yea there are always opportunities within GE whether at that particular site or further a field. If GE like you they are going to invest more into you. Also there are so many departments its great to have access to different areas of the supply chain.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Really good, especially with the interns, there were 3 main houses in which we all lived within a 10 min walk of each other. Each weekend we would organise some event and we continually see each other now.
