The internship was structured to maximise learning and development within and beyond our individual departments. From the outset and throughout the programme, HR and the internship committee provided invaluable support sessions and workshops to develop the skills required to succeed in the working world. This combined with the structured training programmes made the placement somewhat enjoyable. :::Unfortunately, the working environment at General Electric Aviation Wales was nothing short of hostile and unprofessional. Due to an unexpected and major change in the Nantgarw site's management, a toxic culture was created between and within department which unfortunately had a negative impact on my experience.:::
I greatly enjoyed my placement. I was given so much responsibility which was initially daunting but I grasped every opportunity i was given and i have developed so much over the past year. Working with GE means you can work on both Commercial work and wing-to-wing projects (which are projects that involve every department across the business) this is great for building a rapport with numerous colleagues and networking across multiple layers of management.
I had an incredible experience at my placement. I got to learn a lot about several new fields of interest and expand my future job prospects. GE also has a lot of opportunities for learning and growth. They also have a lot of on-sight initiatives such as volunteering and arranging social events so it is easy to get involved.
My experience on work placement has been thoroughly enjoyed, and the knowledge and experiences I now have surpassed my expectations before starting. A placement year is vital in gaining a well-rounded university degree and I now feel more certain in what I want to do after University.
Really enjoyed my time at GE, it was a very unique experience working at one of the biggest companies in the world which is actually undergoing a period of hardship and recovery at the moment. Experiencing the strategic decisions being made has been a great experience. Due to this, priorities in the business are ever-changing and my internship hasn't been exactly what was first advertised, but this has given me more opportunities and outreach in the company.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an Advanced Manufacturing Engineer at GE. I've been involved in such a variety of projects such as robots, implementing helpdesk systems, quality and HSE issues. Some days were better than others but you get a perfectly accurate view of what working for a big corporation is like and as an intern you feel like you make a difference.
Very good placement, with lots of meaning full work on current projects so there were always new products and problems to work on keeping the work exciting and varied. This included working with different teams on site to get the tasks completed and getting a good overview of the industry and different jobs people have within the company making for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
I did my placement at GE Aviation based in Cheltenham. I thoroughly enjoyed my placement as the work was often interesting and challenging. My expectations weren't high as, prior to placement, I had no interest in aviation and was just desperate for a job, however I really did love learning about the industry and the products attached.
- Really enjoying the varying tasks I carry out, from designing, to building, to ordering, to working away, to testing, to communicating with customers - the team is very friendly - There was only one other intern, so the social life was non existent - and no teambuilding events organized to break the ice
I really enjoyed my 12 month work placement and has been the best work experience I have had so far. I met and became friends with amazing colleagues. I was exposed to a range of projects and experiences that are invaluable to my career development. I would highly recommend any student to apply for a placement year.
It was hard work, with some long hours and a lot of mentally taxing work - but it was absolutely worth it. I now have a year of experience working in an actual job in Finance rather than just a scheme, and the recognizable name of GE on my CV.
The internship has been good, there are lots of GE interns across the UK so there are a few events throughout the year with all the interns which is fun. I was engrossed in real work from the outset which gives a good indication about what it would be like after graduating, although sometimes the work that my team were working on was too advanced for me to contribute, so I am often left with not much to do.
I was given freedom and a lot of responsibility throughout my placement which was great, however there was periods where I felt the amount expected of me was far more than other interns would have been doing.
Doing a placement year is the best thing I have ever done. Learning about the real world of work and putting into practice my skills I had developed from uni and part time work was so satisfying. Especially when I knew they were making a real difference to the business. I enjoyed going into work each day, the routine and working alongside a team everyday to get results.
I really enjoyed my placement. Firstly, the office were all so lovely and always keen to pass on their years of experience and knowledge and it was a comfortable office environment to work in. There were around 30 interns in total most working in different departments, this was great as when you needed to go to a new department for whatever reason there was most probably be an intern you could speak to first. With GE being a huge company there was the typical office politics flying around.
My placement was the best experience I have had. I had a range of activities that kept me engaged and motivated. I learnt a lot about my self and working with others which has developed me and in fact made great friends. I look forward to go back and work for GE.
