    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I was able to get involved in a few different projects to keep busy. I was able to learn new skills in software such as PowerBI, OBIEE, Smart Draw

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues were understanding that I was learning but also challenged me just the right amount. The team I worked in was very friendly and always willing to help if I had any issues

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Whenever I had issues, I could just message my manager or the technical lead and they would point me in the right direction.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were some days where I was extremely busy with my PowerBI Project, but there were also days which were less busy which meant that the work load evened itself out

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a fair bit of responsibility on the project I worked on, I did have an experienced IT Analyst working with me on the project, who was able to help if I did have any issues

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During this internship, I have worked in an Agile environment which is pretty useful for the future as I am a computer science student. I also learned batch programming, which I could also see myself using in the future.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere does tend to be quiet, but people are always very friendly and open, It's not like everyone stays to themselves.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised, from the events to the work. I don't have anything negative to say about the organisation.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I feel like the company really did invest a lot in the interns, with weekly development sessions for things like Microsoft Excel and Presentation skills. I feel like some of the sessions were a waste as they were things that I already knew. but they definitely worked on our development.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel that ASI would be a great place to develop my skills and learn from the people around me. I have really enjoyed the placement.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The Social scene was OK. I felt as though the Technology interns were slightly separated from the other interns as we were in different offices.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Edinburgh is not the cheapest of places, but it's also not too expensive either

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a lot of pubs and a few clubs dotted about, they are usually very busy though.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I was given the opportunity to take part in a volunteer day as part of the apprentices' Scottish Apprenticeship Challenge, where we helped renovate the gardens of a care home. There was also a work BBQ.
