Material and Process Analysis Intern Review

I have very much enjoyed my placement, it has provided me with industry experience and an amazing insight into the way that companies produce working products. I have been able to see the company from many different perspectives and from within different departments which has given my a view of different manufacturing processes and techniques as well as being able to meet arange of people from all walks of life.

My colleagues made me feel very valued, with them viewing me as one of the team. I have been doing work which they would be doing if I wasn't there, as well as covering there work when they have been on annual leave or sick. I have been given free rein on what I want to do and how I go about doing it.

My manager has take lots of time to talk to me about tasks and my progress. He has guided me through tasks and tests. He has also given me valuable tips, advice and guidance about future jobs, tasks and current work. He has made me feel confident to perform well and undertake whatever requests come through the door

I have a fair amount of work to do on a daily basis. I have reoccurring tests to complete every week as well as whatever requests are submitted by internal partners. I have also being working on various projects which I can spend all day on or have a week without doing any work on depending on my work load.

I have been given a fair amount of responsibility, I write reports on parts that have been tested which I then pass or fail meaning that I can affect the progress of parts that would be going on to cars or scrap a whole project depanding on the results of the testing.

The internship has provided me with a great amount of automotive experience, leaning new techniques and gaining new skills and building on current ones. All this will asist me with my degree as I will be able to put real world application towards theoretical calculations and models that we study and write assignments for.

I worked in a small team, who are very busy, in a secluded part of the factory, the general atmosphere the office is normally work focuses however we do have time to chat and talk about things we do and have scene as well as having a laugh of things we have heard/scene in the factory

There has been good structure to the placement. My first day I had a introduction day which gave an overview of the company, its history and the values and ethos that the company follows and goes through. Since then I joined my team, had a couple of weeks hand over period with the intern that I replaced, with him teaching me about the equipment, methods, techniques, etc. Then I started working as a full member of the team undertaking test and writing reports. At the end of the internship my replacement started and I had my hand over period teaching them about what they will need to do.

There has been lots of personal training and development. I have been tought how to use multiple pieces of equipment, learning how to use them and technicques to get better results and improve accuracy. There has also be lots of development with me growing in confidence, being able to talk with ease to anyone who comes through the door, no matter what they request or the problem that they bring

There is a graduate scheme at Rolls-Royce as well as in the BMW Group, who own Rolls-Royce. There are also a lot of good level jobs becoming available due to the nature of the automotive industry, people tend to move around alot, getting promoted and moving sideways, which opens up new opportunities for new people

There are over 40 full time interns at Rolls-Royce on year long placements and more on 6 months placements. This enables you to meet lot of other people in the same situation as your self, which is great. Living with other interns I really good as everyone is still uni students and a similar age. We do a lot of social activities, going to the pub, cinema, etc. Interns have been on holiday with each other and gone to events like motor racing and horse racing. The goodwood motor circuit is very close to the factory and there is events on pretty much every day from April to October and there is also the horse racing and other events at the race course.

Having come from the midlands to the south coast I expect the cost of living to be significantly high. The rearest city is chichester which is a small city. It is fairly expensive to live in the centre but a bit further out it is far more reasonable.The two main things that I have noticed that are more expensive is beer and petrol.

There isn't much nightlife in Chichester, there are two bar/restaurants that turn into a nightclub type place, which aren't very good. There is a good number of clubs in Portsmouth which is about 30 minutes way and Bognor Regis also has a couple of clubs and is about 20 mins away

The company doesn't do any out of work teams or schemes but there is plenty to get involved in with the surrounding areas. There are plenty of local sports teams and centres with the local uni and college as well as the tennis academy and local gyms. There is also more activities available close to the coast
