    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my placement year. The whole of MSD and especially my department were very welcoming. I had time to learn about MSD as a whole rather than just my department. Each day was very different which made the full year very enjoyable, allowing me to learn a lot of new skills that I can take about and apply to my final year at uni and other jobs later on in life.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I did each day was definitely valued by my team. Each month I collected data from the team to calculate a P&L of our department. This was then used by a variety of members in our team and also others, outside of our team. Please were always very grateful for the work I did for them.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout my year I received a lot of support from my manager. Each week we would have a 1:1 meeting to catch up about what I have been up to the week and if I need any support or help with any of my work. Also, this was a time to get involved in more projects and to make new connections with different teams to learn more outside of Healthcare Services.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The majority of my placement was very busy. I have monthly tasks that I have to complete for my team but once I have the hang of these projects and tasks, I had time to get involved in projects that I have interested in allowing me to manage my own time and take on as much as I was able.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel I had a lot of responsibility throughout my placement. The data analysis and costing of each month is used to show the company where our money and time is being spent so this was a big responsibility for me as the project was my own and was being used throughout the business.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think the main skill that I have learnt is organization and being able to prioritise my tasks. Using a calendar to plan meetings and work load is a useful skill that I will take away from this year, especially into final year at uni when I will have a lot of coursework to complete with strict deadlines.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office and the people you work with make you want to come back as I have never worked in such a friendly and understand business. They are also very understand for example if you needed to work from home one day or take holiday, it is easy to do.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The year was very well organised. We got to visit the other sites eg.Cramlington, which allowed us to see how other parts of the business worked. We also had lunch and meetings with the leadership team which was very valuable. Alo, the welcome week was organised well as we could meet the other students and learn about MSD before starting our roles.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After spending a year with MSD on my placement, I would love to come back to MSD and join the grad scheme. The atmosphere in the office and the people you work with make you want to come back as I have never worked in such a friendly and understand business.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • 3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • 3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are a few nice restaurants and pubs in the area but the nearest club is in Hertford which is still quite good. However, London is only one train away (30 minutes) so it is easy to go out in London for an evening and get home (as night tube goes to Tottenham hale).

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • 3/5
