    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall, the internship was really enjoyable. Met some really lovely interns but also the people in the office were very friendly as well. The work life balance is very good at Centrica and you are given a lot of trust and freedom in carrying out your work.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The role that I was in felt a little bit isolated but the people that I did occasionally work with were very helpful and I felt that they seriously considered any point that I put across.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • People at the office were very willing to put some time apart to provide support and guidance to the interns.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I think that the balance of work is very good. I was given enough work to keep me busy and I always had something to do. Furthermore, I could work at a pace that was suitable for me.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility from very early on. Once your manager is convinced of your capability, they won't shy away from giving a lot of responsibility.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This was definitely one of the highlights of my placement. Centrica put in an immense amount of resources into training its interns and graduates. Training was provided in presentation skills and excel. Furthermore, Centrica actively encourages its interns to see more of the business. During my time at Centrica, I managed to visit a few power stations to learn more about their operations.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office is very chill. Senior people sit near you and will actively engage in conversation so there is not a hierarchical system at all.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was well organised but a lot of it will depend on the line manager that you are given as they decide on the work that you complete and the level of responsibility that they are willing to place onto you.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • This was one of the key things that really impressed me about Centrica. They go into a lot of effort in developing its interns. During my time here, there have been multiple social and training sessions. The company is also very open to learning visits to different parts of the country to see more of the company.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • There has been a strategic shift in the focus of the company but as long as you're not in a part of the business seeing a reduction then the prospect looks stable.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I was given accommodation in Royal Holloway university with approximately 30 other interns. There was a good social scene and a good mix of people.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living and socialising is fairly high as the prices are similar to London.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife is not too great locally. Windsor, which is a 15 minute drive has a bit more nightlife and is fairly easily accessible.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are a lot of activities to get involved in. The university accommodation has good sports facilities that can be used and the office has a free gym. There are also regular sports sessions in football, ju jitsu, MMA, handball etc.
