    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved the marketing placement with Eaton so much so that I stayed on an additional 2 months to complete some of my major projects within the business and to gain even more marketing experience before I started back at University in September. I've never had a single day the same as another and I've been able to get involved in countless projects and really broaden my marketing knowledge while getting to know a lovely group of people.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day one I felt very valued by the team and very welcomed into the office by everyone. I was given responsibilities from the start which definitely made me feel valued and part of the team!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had fantastic support at my site from my manager and the marketing team. My manager ensured we had weekly catch up meetings to discuss my progress, outstanding work, new work and also if I had any questions or concerns. It was great to have this meeting as it completely focused on how to get the most out of my year and was a way to have a catch up with each other and discuss anything that we had coming up. Also, the HR team who managed the placement students were brilliant checking up on interns through monthly reviews and also organising the training sessions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • As mentioned earlier, I never had a 1 day the same as another which was great. I was constantly busy with projects and tasks to complete and I always had the opportunity to take on more from my manager or other members of the marketing team.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was quite surprised with how much responsibility I was given from the placement, as from the start I was given a lot of responsibility managing processes and projects. As my year progressed and my confidence grew I was taking on much more and project managing major projects which had a large impact on my business unit.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This year has benefited me so much more than I could have imagined. I have a great understanding of how a business works, business processes and also how to work within a business environment. I have learnt new skills and built upon existing which will benefit me in my final year of university but also for jobs in the future. The additional training sessions have also meant I have been able to refine my skills and develop myself as an individual.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was always positive, cheery and inviting. Our site is quite small in comparison to others so you get to know everyone quite quickly.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Our internship was organised really well as it has been running for quite a few years now so any problems have been resolved in previous years. We have been managed well by the HR team and been given plenty of opportunities to broaden our knowledge with external training days and also opportunities to help at careers fairs and assessment centres to gain extra business knowledge.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were given plenty of training and opportunities for development externally where we could improve our presenting skills, excel skills, time management skills etc. The external training we did helped us improve our methods of working and made us work more effectively, which would then benefit the company if they took us on as full time employees as well as benefitting us as a returning student to university.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The employment prospects are positive as they have a graduate scheme where they like to take on interns which know the business well. The company also takes on direct hires so there are opportunities available to meet all needs.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • As a group of interns as a whole across the UK when we were together for training sessions we would all go out for dinner & drinks and socialise between the sites. This was really nice because you wouldn't get to see the other site interns all that often. As the group of interns at the Cwmbran site there was a lot of socialising involved in and out of work e.g. work drinks, dinners, Christmas parties etc.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was fortunate enough to live close enough to the site that I could commute which meant I wasn't impacted by the cost of living in Cwmbran. The area is fairly cheap in terms of cost of living but for socialising it was preferred to go out in Cardiff as there is much more going on in the city centre.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Cwmbran/Newport is ok if you just wanted to pop to a pub or a bar but if you wanted a night out it would always be advised to go into Cardiff. The Cardiff nightlife is much better as it is a student city and has plenty of bars & clubs to visit.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Our site has a weekly 5 a side football team which plays each Monday, when the site was in training for a 12k obstacle course a circuit training class was set up to help the whole team train together. But there are often different activities suggested by the team for everyone to get involved in after work e.g. cocktails and dance classes, go karting, paintballing etc.
