About You
I very much enjoyed the placement, both in terms of relationships built and knowledge picked up.
I felt very valued - there were a number of helpful events planned for us to learn more about law and the firm and to network, and my department surpervisors were also on hand to answer any questions I had.
All our work in departments was supervised and I never felt like I couldn't ask people for guidance. The assessment centre was clearly explained to us and we were able to get in touch early about anything we might need.
I'll be able to prioritise the law I learn on the GDl now I know what kind of law commercial firms practice - and more importantly, how they practice it.
The Company
Very well structured - in addition to an equal amount of time spend across two departments there were several events such as presentation, negotiation and mock tribunal exercises to allow us borad yet in-depth understanding of law.
Very, very friendly - with a big focus on pro bono too, to an extent quite rare among law firms I've spent time with. Everyone is happy to chat and answer any questions you have, and the whole training contract process is done via an assessment centre to ensure fairness.
Several training sessions in areas like business development, presentations, negotiations and advocacy. Supervisor work which aims to teach you more about the process of commercial legal work - I never felt like I was doing something unimportant.
I got to expereince moving between departments, just like a real trainee, and was able to network with employees of all levels. Given responsibility when it came to the special events.
I got to see that the friendly image Reed Smith projecvts wasn't just put on for an open day or interview, but is a real part of the firm.
I was able to reconfirm my interest in becoming a solicitor and the focus on pro bono at the firm made me sure it was a job you can go into because you want to help people.
Everything Else
I was paid £330 per week - the highest vac scheme renumeration I've experienced.
Very many opportunities - including HR directors, partners, senior associates and trainees, and in a variety of situations. I was also able to speak to people at senior levels throughout the firm just by getting in touch with them.
Great fun whether cocktail making or bowling, I always felt part of a team and included in the firm.
Yes - I spoke to many people about social activities and Pro Bono/CSR work, and the firm was especially keen to emphasise these. Through a talk with Learning & Development manager Nigel Spencer I also learnt about the firm's focus on business matters and networking outside of work which is very much encouraged.
As long as they fit with Reed Smith's friendly and socially conscious ethos, definitely!
