    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have really enjoyed my time at Dyson. The opportunities to learn new things, experience amazing technology and meet interesting people has been endless. I have had the chance to work with many different products and teams and that experience has been invaluable. There was always something new and interesting to learn every day.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • From day 1 I felt very much a valued member of the team. I was given responsibilities within projects and people trusted me to complete testing and other tasks for them.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a huge amount of support and guidance from all members of my team. Coming into this placement I had very little experience with programming languages and I found that everyone was happy to help me when I had any problems. My supervisor set up lots of training for me and we worked closely to ensure that I was getting the most out of my time at the company.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Due to the nature of the main product I was working on the amount of daily work varied. However I was always able to find someone within the team who could give me tasks to complete. I also had a number of separate individual projects given to me which I could work on if need be.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a huge amount of responsibility from an early stage in my placement. I was trusted to complete testing and produce reports and documents which were to be used by the rest of the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I completed a number of courses, such as CAD and risk assessment training, which have all helped to develop my skills as an engineer. I have improved my ability to perform testing and my practical skills, such as soldering, have greatly improved. I was lucky enough to work with a number of different teams with in electronics so my knowledge of different areas has greatly increased. This will certainly help me during my last 2 years of university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere at Dyson is incredibly relaxed and friendly. Everyone is lovely and people are willing to help with any questions or problems. I found it very easy to talk to and approach senior members of my team.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There were a number of intern training events which were organised. These were very useful in developing learning and communication skills. I found that within my team my supervisors organised my time very well. I had plenty of interesting projects given to me throughout the year. I had talks set up with various employees from around the company which aimed to help me think about what path I might want to take my career.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I got to know the other interns very well and we organised several trips outside of work togethere. Within my team we had numerous social outings to various restaurants to celebrate Christmas and product launches.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • There are many areas around Malmesbury which are relatively cheap to live in. Bath is quite expensive compared to some areas although it is a student town so there are always special discounts etc. I lived in Chippenham which I found quite reasonable for rent and socialising.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Chippenham is fairly quiet for Nightlife although there are a number of nice pubs in town. Malmesbury itself is also quiet although again it has a number of pubs. Many employees live in Bath and Bristol where the nightlife is far better and more varied.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Dyson has various social and sports clubs available to employees. There is also a large Christmas party which was very enjoyable. During the summer months they hold a Fete which included the Dyson challenge, food and various team sports.
