    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I received sufficient training at the beginning to help me settle down, which allows me to understand background of my work and start contributing. This made the experience enjoyable as I was working on real projects immediately instead of wasting time sitting around.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Work I did was appreciated by colleagues through their immediate feedback, which further motivates me to try harder with upcoming tasks. Outside work, I was welcomed to join lunches, basketball scrimmages from my first week.

    4/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Supervisors and other senior engineers are easily reachable, and I can get multiple opinions and suggestions on everything, giving me a much better understanding of things I'm working on. On top of work related questions, they were keen to help with administrative procedures and explaining the IT system to me.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I didn't have a fixed list of tasks, instead I have some longer term objectives with a few deadlines. I enjoyed pushing myself, so I filled up my day and make sure I can achieve everything I set out for myself.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of freedom in terms of the type of tasks and sequence of completion, which allows me to plan my time efficiently, adjusting my schedule to fit with meetings and deadlines. At the end of internship, I was given the opportunity to present my work without any specific restriction, I was given the responsibility to judge what kind of materials I need for various audience.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I received both internal and external training on softwares that I will be using in my degree. I also applied knowledge from my degree, which helps me consolidate my knowledge from first and second year.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very modern high-tech company atmosphere: no formal dress code, flexible working hours, flexible working location etc. Typical things you can expect from a high-tech company.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • A series of basic training was scheduled for the first weeks and there are other optional trainings I can sign up for throughout my internship. IT equipment was there, ready to use when I started, allowing me to start immediately.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I received useful external trainings which allowed me to be more efficient with my work. Skills I gained here will be useful in university or other companies. Senior colleagues were keen to share their knowledge, helping me with the background knowledge of projects going on around. This improves my commercial awareness as an engineering student.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Above 25 days holiday

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • With the rapid rate of expansion, the organisation stays 'young', which will be an attractive aspect. A 'young' feeling helps attract future graduates like myself, and I would return as a graduate.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • It depends on the students themselves, some really enjoyed, some didn't. There will be a few who's not great at making new friends in a short amount of time (12 weeks summer placement).

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cost of living was low if you lived within walking distance. However there's not much in Malmesbury, it's a quiet market town. Gym is open for extended hours, so I can go to the gym before and after work, which is the only thing I need.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nope, there's no nightlife in Malmesbury. Period. If you're looking for nightlife, live in a nearby city (Bristol?) and commute to work.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Sports and charity activities are advertised in advance, so it is easy for new starters to join without knowing anyone.

    4/5
