The Role
The entirety of placement year was an amazing learning experience full of challenges. Of course work sometimes did get monotonic but overall I am very happy with my decision to have a placement year at Sophos.
People at my team were very friendly and even though I have much less experience, they were always ready to patiently explain anything that I have issue with. Moreover, I was felling like an equal member of the team since day one.
What I liked about Sophos is that I only needed to raise a question and I was be overflowed with information that did take few days to process.
There were times especially before project release that we were very busy. Although, most of the time you have your work, but because it is very relaxed environment you can at any time go for a coffee or a cigarette break. Nobody is watching you over your shoulder, so as long as you deliver you can work at your own pace.
Enough to make you fell like you are doing something important but not to much so there wouldn't be a big impact on project in case you encounter serious problems
In my opinion computer science is all about practice and the placement year was a absolute necessity for me to get some hands on experience and significantly increase my chances to relatively easily find well paid job. It was amazing learning experience where in first 3 months I arguably learned more than I learned in uni in my first 2 years.
The Company
Probably the thing that I loved about Sophos isthe fact that whole building is an open office. No wal ,extremely relaxed atmosphere and positive vibe floating around the air. NO STRESS AT ALL and everyone is more or less positive.
In the begging it was quite hectic, because my team was going through a lot of changes however after a while everything became much more stable and better..
They invested quite a lot as I am potential future employee. Everybody was ready to help with anything and you can clearly see that Sophos is a company that would spare no expenses if they thing that something would benefit you and in turn them.
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
Healthcare/Dental
It would definitely consider to work here, especially knowing that company is growing and progressing really fast,
The Culture
It was OK.
I lived in Oxford which is 5 miles away from Sophos and it is an amazing and very beautiful city! Cost of living would be quite cheap if you compare it with accommodation in big cities.
As oxford its mostly student town, nightlife there is quite good.
If you are keen on finding some, there are plenty.
