The Role
I enjoyed the placement very much - challenging and engaging work, the chance to make a difference within my team and great facilities at Sophos
We were given real work to complete and our colleagues listened to our input and valued our contributions
Fortnightly one-to-one meetings with my supervisor to discuss progress and raise any issues
Generally I was given enough work to stay busy but I was not overloaded or expected to do more than would be possible
We were treated like the other developers and we were given real work that would have been given to permanent developers
I would not have expected the experience I gained on placement to help in degree studies as much as they ultimately did
The Company
Great collaborative atmosphere, everyone is friendly and approachable and willing to help you
Contact with HR before the placement was comforting, they allowed me to choose which team I would like to be in, although I had no contact with members of my team before joining the company. We were given training after starting to ease us into the work
We developed skills daily during general work, as well as some internal training to do with proprietary tools
Subsidised Canteen
I would be very happy to return after graduation
The Culture
There are many placement students who all hang out together, as well as graduates who have recently joined the company
Cheaper than I expected
Not a massive city, but a student area so quite good
Always opportunities for clubs and sports being advertised
