    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the challenges I faced and the work completed. It was interesting and I learned a lot about a subject that not many people know about. I also enjoyed the feeling of having done something that might affect the company, not just small tasks which are usually given to placement students.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt like one of the team from day 1.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • 100% guidance was given to me. Gradually, as I found my own feet in the company, the mentoring reduced unless I asked for help or required it.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always kept busy with something to do. Long projects were broken into parts with smaller tasks given to have a change of topic and refresh my mind once in a while.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • For the tests and project I was given, it was my call on everything I did. I had to plan my day and organise what was to happen in the present and in a couple of days time. I was given free range on the machines and test rigs and had input when required from my mentor.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I was not looking forward to presenting my data to the team as I am a very nervous public speaker when it comes to displaying data, however I was told that it would all be fine and it was something I had to practice and do. After, I felt very happy and felt like I was able to do it again. Time management and data analysis was also ingrained during my placement. As my placement was with a company, I attended and collected data for meetings with other companies. Having been present in a business meeting will benefit my future job applications. I also learned to use certain computer programmes and code languages which will definitely benefit me in future studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Very happy people, always greeting you and smiling. Friendly and supportive.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • There was a clear plan of what I would achieve within the 3 months I was on placement. There was room given for delays in which I was able to easily fit in the tertiary part of the project assigned to me.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was put on several training courses such as Advanced VBA training and Scanning Electron Microscope Training (very unique as not many people even within Dyson have had the opportunity to use an SEM). I was also present for company meetings and was brought on company days to factores to produce the object of what I was working on.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing, I think. I need to wait and see!

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a good social scene. Team outings such as paddle boarding and going to the pub!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very high!

    2/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The area I worked in was a small village, but only a 30 minute drive out of Malmesbury brought you to Bristol where most employees commuted from every day. Bristol, being a big city had everything and anything you could want to do in an evening/night.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Everyday employees do a host of different activities such as rock climbing and football.
