The Role
I really enjoyed my internship. It was a very useful insight into working for a transport business, and the sort of work that I would be part of on the graduate scheme.
I was always respected and often encouraged. The business has a wide range of staff from many backgrounds, some of whom have not worked with students/graduates before - but if you are friendly and down to earth, and show that you have a genuine interest in their work, almost all will be more than happy to give you their time.
Management were extremely welcoming and supportive of me, and took a genuine interest in my thoughts.
The internship was loosely structured, which meant there could be times when I was doing very little, but also times when I was quite involved in something.
This varied depending on where I was placed, and there were sometimes understandable health and safety and legal circumstances to consider, but generally I was treated as another member of staff.
I learnt valuable lessons in people engagement/management and operational management, which are very relevant to the career I want to pursue.
The Company
There was a very good atmosphere at my location, and at most of the other locations I visited.
The internship was quite loosely structured, which meant there could be times when I had little to do. That said, this often allowed me to jump-in to see things that I might otherwise have been unavailable for.
There was no formal training or development as such, but I learnt a lot and gained a unique insight into the business.
National Travel
I later applied to the permanent graduate scheme and was offered a position. My internship was instrumental in achieving this.
The Culture
N/A - I was the only intern in my region
N/A - I was based within a short commute of my home
N/A - as before
Not that I can think of - but, to be honest, I wouldn't hold this against the internship at all.
