    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The job gave a very good all-round experience of sales and marketing. This is a real job and you are not 'making the tea',

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I am a valued and important member of the team

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Regular one to one meetings with your manager and centralised support through HR and grad and intern team.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • You never have nothing to do in this job. There is a lot to do but the targets and expectations are realistic. You are not here after hours once you get the hang of the job but you have plenty to do 9-5.30.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I manage Partners that provide millions of pounds of revenue to the company. These companies are my responsibility.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The placement has changed me considerably. I feel completely prepared for the working environment after graduation and in much better shape to take on my final year at uni. This is without a doubt the best 'use' of a year out of uni possible. I have skills for life as a result of this job.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Microsoft offices in Reading are very modern and a very dynamic environment to work in. My department differs from others within the company in that my office consists primarily of contractors, some of whom have their own issues or politics that don't really relate directly to Microsoft. This can on occasion lead to some hostility in the wider working environment but this is very rare. Microsoft Reading campus has a pitch and put, Starbucks, private lake, Xboxs all around, pool table, TVs, table footy, Gym, Wellbeing Centre, free icecream and drinks all over the place etc - but beware, you can used to this VERY quickly which could lead to disappointment when you go back to uni :)

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • On the whole, the internship is setup very well and has formal processes. Because Microsoft take so many interns there is a dedicated intern and grad team.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Microsoft invested a lot of time in my training and development with many, many opportunities for enrichment.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would like to come back to Microsoft as a graduate, places are very limited, but we will see!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a very strong intern community in the Reading offices, you will make lots of friends. There are only a handful of interns in other Microsoft offices such as Cardinal Place in London so it might just be a Reading thing!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Reading is not cheap. Rent based on a house share is about average (£300-£350 per month). Reading itself is not that cheap for nights out, so if you're used to £1 a pint at the student union you will be in for a shock!

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Reading nightlife is actually pretty good!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Endless opportunities.... Basically there is a club for everything.

    5/5
