The Role
I really enjoyed my experience and was very sad to leave! The work was different from anything I have done before and very varied, and the opportunity to see the results of all that hard work during welcome week was very satisfying!
I felt very valued by the team as I was doing important work and they were appreciative that I was reducing their workload. They were all very friendly and willing to offer help when needed, and treated us more like colleagues that students.
I was given plenty of support and always felt like I could ask for help if needed, however my supervisor was not overbearing and I was left to complete tasks on my own- I found this management style suited me very well.
The first couple of weeks were very quiet as there was not much work to do, however things quickly got busier and my workload increased a lot- by the last couple of weeks I was really really busy and planning my time was very important!
The team seemed to trust my judgement and I was given a large amount of responsibility, however there was always someone I could go to for support. Having this responsibility made me feel trusted and very pleased when my project succeeded!
I have developed a large number of skills, including communication, time management and IT, and also had interview and professional etiquette training, which will really help me in finding employment after graduating.
The Company
The internship was well organised- Interviewing happened in March so I was informed that I had got a place early on, and was kept updated and well informed before my start date. I was also able to communicate with my manager before I started who was really helpful in answering my questions.
There was a training program where we were given workshops on interview technique, professional etiquette and also presentation practice to prepare us for future job applications. This was very well organised and helpful.
Due to the nature of the internship there is no need for my role during most of the year, however the University runs a graduate scheme, and there are many other opportunities for employment in a huge variety of departments. I will definitely consider applying!
The Culture
There were very few interns at the University, and my team were generally too busy to socialise outside work, however we did have a few team lunches in the University food outlets which were very enjoyable.
Rent and food are very cheap in the area South of the University, and there are loads of places both in the city and on the outskirts to socialise at a low cost. Public transport is also very cheap and easy to use.
Birmingham has many clubs and bars to visit!
