    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the placement. The team are all very friendly, supervisor is supportive, and work is interesting and varied.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team were very welcoming, and appreciative of my help.I was immediately included in all outside-of-work social events too.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My main supervisor was available for meetings to discuss my aims/expectations of the placement, and any problems I was having. The researchers I worked closely with also provided a lot of support and feedback.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The workload varied because of the nature of the placement - Sometimes there was a lot to do, and other times I had to find work to fill my time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Towards the end of the placement, I was given the opportunity to lead on an experimental intervention in a school.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed many transferrable skills such as time-management, basic computer skills, and communicating. I also learnt lots of research skills that will be invaluable for my dissertation, and also stand me in good stead for applying for jobs after graduation.

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office was lively, and we all got on really well, so had lots to talk about. However, everyone had work to do, so it was mostly quiet except for our breaks!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was made clear to me on beginning the placement that I could tailor it to my goals and expectations.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I attended workshops to learn about the assessment protocols, and how to use some specific computer programs.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I'd love to be able to come back in a couple of years and do a PhD!

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I made very good friends with my fellow placement student, and the girls in my office. The team also held social events such as meals/parties for when people joined, left, or graduated! There were also fortnightly group lunches for everyone to catch up over.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived on the outskirts of the student area, so the cost of living was relatively low. However I quickly spent lots of money buying lunch each day!

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Lots of pubs in the student area, and only a short train/bus journey from the centre of Birmingham.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I volunteered at conferences and family support days, which gave me a good chance to meet lots of people
