    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my 13 weeks at Whitbread. I found the work environment brilliant, and the project I was supporting with interesting and fulfilling.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very welcomed by the team. I was invited immediately on team days, great for building rapport and feeling like you have always been part of the team, even though I was only there for a short time.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was fantastic. She was approachable, supportive and had the right balance of fun and friendly to work with, yet driven to deliver the project objectives.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I felt it was a fair balance. I had a variety of tasks within the role. I am someone though who is keen to push themselves and complete as much as possible to the highest standard, so any challenge presented I sought, to try and increase experience and exposure.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt that as an intern I was valued and the workload responsibility was just about right. I liked having a supportive manager for guidance, and believe that this was beneficial as I have never completed a project like this before, so all advice was welcome.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Definitely! The benefits of having a supportive manager, being exposed in a real business is so useful to looking ahead post-graduation. I think I have come back to uni following the intership with a more focused approach and a vision of where I would like to sit in a business after finishing my studies.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The open planned office with, what would become, friendly familiar faces always makes you feel at home. Yes, there are times when there are serious deadlines to be met, but generally there would usually be a little bit of fun chatter and catch up. If you're on a diet though, avoid the office - there is always chocolate, or sweets, or cake (and mostly freshly baked from the team)!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I felt that there was a good induction process, that it was good to meet the interns in other functions. We had the opportunity to sit down with a graduate who worked within the resourcing team on a frequent bases, who had been through a similar process to us. She was an awesome contact to have. My line manager specifically set out an induction process specific for the area of the business I was working. And it was nice (and sad, because it was over) to bring the internship to a close with a reflective session.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I felt quite invested in. I felt there was a great deal of time and resource allocated to establishing, what was Whitbread's first group of interns. I felt the resourcing team supported greatly with the foundations of what a PDP could look like and my line manager specifically encouraged me to engage in the area of the business specifically I was working in.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would like to return to an internship this summer. I have mentioned this to those relevant in the organisation. I just hope I am lucky enough to be able to return.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We as the Interns did have lunches together occasionally. We did keep in contact and it was nice to have familiar faces around. Working within separate teams and being as busy as we all were at some points made it hard for us to meet frequently, but we were all enjoying the experience so much and made more social contacts in our individual teams assigned.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living in Luton is fairly reasonable. I lived with family, but for people renting its a reasonable place price based to rent.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Although I didn't engage in the nightlife locally, comments from others were that it was a fair, and easy access to London to.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Whitbread do have a social group, which organises theatre trips etc.
